,f

MINUTES

WEEK OF AUGUST 5, 1996

The meeting was called to order by Chair Richard Wojt. Commissioner Robert
Hinton was present. Commissioner Glen Huntingford was not present.

COMMISSIONERS' BRIEFING SESSION

APPROVAL OF THE MINUTES: The minutes of July 22, 1996 were approved
as read by motion of Commissioner Hinton, seconded by Chairman Wojt. The motion carried.

Sheriff Pete Piccini re: Request for Additional Traffic Deputy: Public Services
Director Gary Rowe submitted a memo regarding the Sheriffs request for an additional Deputy.
Sheriff Pete Piccini stated that the Department needs another officer for traffic patrol. In 1995
there were four fatal accidents, two of which were alcohol related. To date in 1996 there have
been four fatal accidents, with three of them being alcohol related. There have been fatalities in
both years on either Beckett Point Road and Cape George Road. The department has been
trying to have the Patrol Deputies do more traffic work, but they are needed to handle crime
related activities. Sheriff Piccini then reported on the duties of a Traffic Officer. He reported
that to fund this position for the balance of 1996 would cost about $20,000 depending on the
vehicle assigned. It will cost approximately $55,000 to fund the position in 1997. The State
Patrol has agreed to assist the County Deputies for a while in patrolling County roads.

Commissioner Hinton asked if the Patrol Deputies do any traffic work at all? SheriffPiccini
stated that they do when they can, but setting them up in a program is very hard because they get
pulled away to other calls. Commissioner Hinton then asked what the Patrol and Traffic
Sergeants do? SheriffPiccini reported that these officers take calls and patrol, and they have
additional administrative duties. Commissioner Hinton asked if the Department is using all of
the officers to the fullest extent? Sheriff Piccini answered that they are. The discussion
continued regarding community-based policing, the use of Reserve Deputies, and law enforce-
ment in the West End.

Commissioner Hinton noted that he would like to have Commissioner Huntingford present when
this decision is made. This item will be rescheduled on the August 12, 1996 agenda.

, "
f ~ '-

?? ..':
-- ","-' ,',

Page 1
0 1.1.85
