There should be no place for industrial
harbor complexes to load and ship aggregate or other mining products to
distant markets. Not only would this permanently spoil the shoreline,
threaten water quality and destroy essential habitat; it would also be
accompanied by massive strip mining within our watershed.

I am attaching the landmark 1976 Shoreline Hearings Board decision on
the Hama Hama pit-to-pier project. Please make this available to all who
will ultimately approve the Jefferson County SMP. Please pay particular
attention to the Hearings Board rationale for revoking the Mason County
permit. This is well outlined in CONCLUSIONS OF LAW.

The Shoreline Hearings Board recognized the enormous negative impacts
of the Hama Hama shoreline mining operations that consisted of a large
pier to accommodate the loading of barges.
