HomeMy WebLinkAbout062725 - Jefferson County Public Health Press Release_ Port Townsend Bay_ Kilisut Harbor and Admiralty Inlet Shellfish OpeningJefferson County, WA.Recent shellfish samples taken from Fort Flagler State Park indicate that the level of biotoxin that causes paralytic shellfish poisoning has dropped below the closure limit for all species of clams, oysters and mussels. The opening includes beaches in Port Townsend Bay, Marrowstone Island, Kilisut Harbor and Mystery Bay. Previously, the area was closed for harvesting butter and varnish clams, which retain toxins longer than other species. Jefferson County Public Health has removed warning signs from public access points. Please note however, that the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife (WDFW) recreational shellfish season is closed at Mystery Bay State Park, and that the recreational season at Fort Flagler State Park doesn’t open until July 1. Kinney Point State Park is open all year, but is only accessible by boat. Chimacum Tidelands is open north of Chimacum Creek, but closed to the south due to persistent bacterial pollution from Irondale Creek. To find out which areas are safe to harvest shellfish in Washington, and for a link to the WDFW harvesting seasons and rules, please check the map at www.doh.wa.gov/ShellfishSafety.htm <http://www.doh.wa.gov/ShellfishSafety.htm> or call the Biotoxin Hotline at 1-800-562-5632.
