He brings a strong background in policy and advocacy, grassroots organizing, and strategic communications. Prior to WWRC, he worked at The Mountaineers, advancing policy and advocacy initiatives focused on outdoor recreation, conservation, and expanding equitable access to public lands. "Besides his professional interest in conservation and recreation policy, Nathaniel is passionate about writing and storytelling," said Yvonne Kraus, Executive Director. "We’re excited to have his guidance and leadership on our State Policy Committee, and we look forward to his informative and engaging summaries and media releases that showcase the breadth of the Coalition’s work and impact, and our vision for the future. As the Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program (WWRP) 2023-2025 grant cycle comes to a close at the end of this month, a lot of projects are finishing up. And that means we get to do what we love most: attend new project openings and celebrate new parks, trails, and habitat restoration projects! I was fortunate to visit several project openings and Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program-funded sites in the greater Spokane area last month. Spokane County has some of the least amount of public lands per capita: about 10%.That's far behind the average of 30% in the West, and surprising when compared to King County, where just over 50% of the land is in public hands. We look forward to many more conservation and recreation projects in and around Spokane, to bring natural habitat improvement, recreation access, and joy to the region's humans and wildlife. Led by Sylvana Niehuser, Interim Director, and Neal Glassburn, Project Engineer, the tour showcased the 1.45-mile, ADA-compliant asphalt trail winding through the scenic Grass Lake Nature Park. Neal has been involved in the project from land use permitting through final construction, making this a particularly meaningful milestone. The Grass Lake Nature Park Trail project received a WWRP Trails Grant of $467,990 with a Sponsor Match of $646,927, for a total investment of $1,114,917. These funds were used to construct approximately 3,500 linear feet of ADA-accessible, multi-modal trail connecting Kaiser Road to a City maintenance gravel road leading to Harrison Avenue. This area lies on the ancestral lands of the škwáxčənəxʷ (Moses-Columbia), Syilx (Okanagan), Yakama, Confederated Tribes of the Colville Reservation, and the Cayuse, Umatilla, and Walla Walla peoples. This stretch of the creek is currently in degraded condition due to an incised stream channel and active headcuts. The project aims to halt the incision process, improve water quality, enhance stream habitat, and restore the surrounding riparian vegetation. To accomplish this, WDFW will install beaver dam analogs and implement native restoration plantings.
