In this episode, Chris and Siobhan visit the Far Reach Botanical Conservancy with founders Sue Milliken and Kelly Dodson, who possess a lifetime embodiment of plant knowledge and a long history of cultivating and conserving rare plants. On 6 acres in Port Townsend, the Conservancy acquires and conserves botanically significant wild and cultivated ornamental plants new to North America with special emphasis on those that are threatened or vulnerable to loss. Our “What’s New?” feature for this week will take a look at the new album, From What I Recall by the Premazzi/Nasser Quartet. We’ll hear three cuts from that one. JULY 8 This week we’ve got a classic cut from Miles Davis’ Kind of Blue, great early electric guitar from Charlie Christian, some Latin influenced jazz from Dizzy Gillespie and Piet Verbist and much more including this week’s “What’s New?” feature will spotlight Michael Waldrop’s new release Native Son. In addition our semi-regular feature "Today In Jazz” is back with a segment honoring the great band leader and vocalist Billy Eckstine on his birthday. We’ll hear three cuts from him. JULY 15 We’ve got jazz legends like the Modern Jazz Quartet, Wayne Shorter and Brad Mehldau on the program for this week as well as the Ethnic Heritage Ensemble, Isaiah Thompson and Joe Wilder. Candace spent years bouncing around trying on different professions. She worked in life insurance, in assisted living management, wireless communications and other corporate jobs. But auto-immune diseases closed several career paths. After moving to PT in 2016, she was raising her two sons and heading the PTA when a random encounter landed her a contract with Main Street. That somehow blossomed into Corvus Communications in 2019. And then the pandemic hit. Somehow the fledgling company managed to hold on. Now Corvus is a strong marketing firm that creates a broad range of materials including brochures, business cards, logos on hats/shirts/etc. She’s even done one-off books — such as a life story for a Hospice patient and materials for the subsequent farewell. Each Cats in Our Laps features live and recorded music, either in the KPTZ studio or from the world ‘round via Zoom, as well as interviews, poems read by Cats Poet Laureate Deborah Kate Hammond, and the week’s weather forecast with Cats Weather Laureate Al Latham. Keeping the Cats in line, in laps or not, is host Phil Andrus. July 6 At the reader’s podium Bill Mawhinney. After Bill has steps down from the podium, there are two featured artists, the Ladom Ensemble (above) from Toronto and Port Townsend resident Robert Force, of “In Search of the Wild Dulcimer”. The Ladom Ensemble describe themselves as a mini-orchestra made up of four musicians who play a kind of acoustic fusion drawn from Western classical, klezmer, rock, tango, jazz, east coast traditional and classical Persian influences. In the 9:00 hour of this night’s show, Robert Force continues his ongoing personal retrospective he began some months ago. With Friday the 13th falling on a Sunday in July (ask the Pogo for clarification), Autumn Sutton reads for us, singer songwriter Joe Kelly presents his original songs from the midwest, flautist Cornell Kinderknecht introduces his newest recording of Native American-inspired melodies and soprano Laura Bohn visits from Amsterdam. Laura returns to Cats in Our Laps to chat about her upcoming performance in the Concerts in the Barn series.
