Dear neighbors –
This week, I joined my House Democratic colleagues in doing everything we could to fight back against these dangerous and disastrous cuts to Medicaid, Medicare, and SNAP in President
Trump’s Big, Sh*tty Bill.
We are meant to be celebrating the anniversary of our independence this week. But how free can we really be when the people who have the most power would rather take away health care
and food access from their own constituents in an effort to not upset their king?
The same people who will celebrate Independence Day by quoting the Declaration of Independence are the very people who just made it abundantly clear that they only care about protecting
“life, liberty, and pursuit of happiness” of billionaires — not the regular people they represent.
These Republican members of Congress put billionaires' bank accounts before the children and families who rely on SNAP for food.
They put billionaires' bank accounts before children and families who rely on Medicaid for health care.
When I testified <https://iqconnect.house.gov/iqextranet/iqClickTrk.aspx?&cid=WA06ER&crop=14453.5488438.5173255.7318396&report_id=&redirect=https%3a%2f%2fyoutu.be%2fSFtBT4G6edw%3fsi%3d777acdXqZXLxded
F&redir_log=116022644134321> against this disastrous bill before the House Rules Committee this week, I testified on behalf of the 27,000+ federal workers who call our community home.
I testified on behalf of the 1.8 million Washingtonians — children, seniors, and working families — who rely on Medicaid. And the 72 million Americans nationwide who depend on Medicaid
to survive.
What’s become painfully clear is that if you live in a state with Republican leadership, your health and wellbeing is up for debate.
Don't take my word for it. Here’s what some of my Republican colleagues have said out loud in recent weeks:
"We all are going to die.” –Senator from Iowa, responding to concerns about Medicaid cuts. 700,000 Iowans rely on Medicaid, including 36% of the state’s children.
“They will get over it.” –Senator from Kentucky. 1.4 million Kentuckians depend on Medicaid, and it covers 68% of nursing home residents.
“We aren’t cutting Medicaid.” –Senator from South Carolina, who is flat-out lying. 1.3 million South Carolinians are on Medicaid.
“If you're going to be on the public wagon... you should try to help pull it.” –Congressman from Louisiana. 1.8 million Louisianans depend on Medicaid — including the rural hospitals
trying to keep their doors open.
These aren’t just policy disagreements — these are life-and-death decisions. And I refuse to stand by while they gamble with the health and wellbeing of millions of people.
I filed eight amendments to this bill, including one that would strike the Medicaid cuts entirely.
I carry your voices with me in this fight, like the voice of Larry from Aberdeen who shared: “Many families in rural communities already struggle with lower incomes and hardship. These
cuts would exacerbate poverty and risk hospital closures. Don’t support a bill that prioritizes tax cuts for the wealthy over the basic needs of our families.”
And Jessica from Tacoma who shared: “My daughter is developmentally delayed, Autistic, and profoundly Deaf. Medicaid pays for her job coach — without it, she can’t work. Please don’t
take that away.”
I hear you. I’m with you. And I’m fighting like hell to protect you.
I will not give up this fight — you, and the American people, deserve better.
