I am forwarding this notice to the Commissioners to highlight what is happening in Kitsap County, with regard to water quality, i.e. downgrading to prohibited for harvest.
Kitsap is the county the Jeffco SMP updates are using as a template to base their shellfish aquaculture regulations on. Shellfish aquaculture requires clean safe waters and shellfish
farmers have fought for that for decades.
Kitsap county is hostile to aquaculture and permissive towards water quality. By using Kitsap’s SMP update language for aquaculture, Jefferson County is turning away from preserving
water quality and supporting aquaculture. I can only guess at why you would do such a thing but I find it deeply disturbing.

Recently, we changed the classification within two different areas of the Hood Canal 2 Growing Area in Kitsap County. We downgraded approximately 136 acres from Approved to Prohibited
along the northeast shoreline of Hood Canal 2 at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor. This change is based on a reevaluation of the overwater and upland conditions at Naval Base Kitsap-Bangor.
We also revised the Prohibited area for the Olympic View Marina in Seabeck to encompass the whole marina, which changes the classification of approximately 20 acres from Approved to
Prohibited. This revision is based on the reevaluation of the Olympic View marina, which has changed in alignment since its last evaluation.
