And, according to a new Gallup poll <https://jcira.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e6a5ce9c533fce19d6336ca83&id=9a5351939e&e=536eb1b1db> , American's attitudes towards immigration is more positive, with 79% of all Americans now think that immigration is a good thing. Interview with an Immigration Frontliner Here in Jefferson County we have a vibrant and diverse immigrant community that JCIRA works to support. In Seattle, the influx of immigrants over the last few years has stressed the city’s and county’s social service systems. One example is the shelters that served unhoused families. In an interview with a frontline worker at a shelter, I learned about the challenges and rewards of working with long-term and newly arrived immigrants, refugees, and asylum-seekers. Due to security concerns, the name of the interviewee (we will call her “Anna”) and the shelter are withheld. Anna is a Housing Specialist at a privately-funded shelter for unhoused families in Seattle. She estimates that 60% of their residents are immigrants, mostly refugees or asylum-seekers, given this status because of the conditions of their home countries. The facility, in an old hotel, houses people from all over the world, including, but not limited to, Honduras, Dominican Republic, Columbia, Peru, Mexico, Angola, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nigeria, Ethiopia, and Eritrea. When immigrants arrive, Anna is responsible for placing people in shelters, and helping to guide them as they settle in their new temporary home. One problem is that, while refugees can work right away, asylum-seekers cannot work for 150 days, impeding their ability to start the road to independence. Because they are private, they can help their clients (or “guests”) find rental assistance that federally-funded facilities, that require a Social Security card, can not. In general, most residents stay for up to 90 days, although some have been there much longer. Anna talks about her days within this multicultural environment, especially at meal time (the shelter serves two meals/day), of the families living at the shelter. While rewarding work, Anna worries about the safety of her clients under the current governmental regime. When I asked her if people were scared or worried, she said yes, but they still believed that there was a process for them to attain citizenship, and they continue to check as their cases wind their way through court. Those of us who are secure in our ability to live and work in this country without fear of interrogation, incarceration or deportation, owe a debt of gratitude to the frontline workers who are helping immigrants every day support their families despite a hostile federal government regime that does not welcome them. -P. Ella estima que el 60 % de los residentes son inmigrantes, en su mayoría refugiados o solicitantes de asilo, debido a las condiciones de sus países de origen. Las instalaciones, ubicadas en un antiguo hotel, acogen a personas de todo el mundo, entre otros países, Honduras, República Dominicana, Colombia, Perú, México, Angola, República Democrática del Congo, Nigeria, Etiopía y Eritrea.
