Emerging fish trap fishery makes history on the lower Columbia River—offering new hope for wild salmon and steelhead recovery. ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ ‌ <https://default.salsalabs.org/Xd6035904-8c00-4cf3-9913-5c22e2065c11/e1f9ba72-dc83-4f20-90cd-07d9d1ee41b3> <https://default.salsalabs.org/T33e4af89-ebbb-470d-a07e-a6c08ad2ce2a/e1f9ba72-dc83-4f20-90cd-07d9d1ee41b3> <https://default.salsalabs.org/Tbcbeb1ec-bf3b-471c-9458-ddd5454b81bf/e1f9ba72-dc83-4f20-90cd-07d9d1ee41b3> <https://default.salsalabs.org/Tf377feb3-0699-4576-8a2d-c9704b8a28df/e1f9ba72-dc83-4f20-90cd-07d9d1ee41b3> Commercial Fish Traps Return to Columbia River in Historic Comeback for Wild Salmon and Steelhead Recovery After nearly a century, commercial fish traps, once banned due to poor management that led to the overharvest and decline of wild salmon, are returning to the lower Columbia River—this time as a revitalized tool to help protect and restore the basin’s threatened wild fish populations. Beginning this month, local fishers in Washington and Oregon will launch a commercial fish trap fishery at three sites along the lower Columbia River <https://default.salsalabs.org/Tb3ba1cfb-a1f1-458 2-9e97-977a68838079/e1f9ba72-dc83-4f20-90cd-07d9d1ee41b3> —marking the first legal use of this ancient fishing method since 1934. In this historic first year, the states of Washington and Oregon have authorized the inaugural commercial fishing season to assess the tool's potential for broader use in the lower Columbia River <https://default.salsalabs.org/T223b30ea-105d-470a-bdce- 8ccb8ed03f9d/e1f9ba72-dc83-4f20-90cd-07d9d1ee41b3> . The emerging fishery will be operated by local commercial fishers and fully monitored by the Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, with additional monitoring and technical support from Wild Fish Conservancy staff. This historic milestone is the result of more than a decade of research and collaboration between Wild Fish Conservancy and local fishers—and the enduring commitment of our members. It’s because of people like you that we’re able to celebrate this win for wild fish today. For years, selective fishing gears like fish traps have been recommended in Washington and Oregon and are recognized as a critical reform to help Southern Resident killer whales access their primary prey <https://default.salsalabs.org/T4556712f-5e5f-4729-be52-e0b6f309a963/e1f9ba72-dc83-4f 20-90cd-07d9d1ee41b3> —a key factor in their recovery. When members of the scientific community spoke out in support of fish traps <https://default.salsalabs.org/T08f0e63a-0dd7-4b2b-a262-11e9c2289d73 /e1f9ba72-dc83-4f20-90cd-07d9d1ee41b3> , thousands of individuals like you took action and rallied behind the cause. Your belief in our mission—and your willingness to take action and use your voice—helped make this victory possible. Thank you. As we celebrate this historic moment, we invite you to help sustain and expand this critical work with a donation to support science-based solutions for wild fish recovery <https://default.salsalabs. org/Tb899d881-46ba-44d3-8c1d-7f277173cdfc/e1f9ba72-dc83-4f20-90cd-07d9d1ee41b3> . <https://default.salsalabs.org/Ta9e40ecf-c581-47fc-a22f-c4f4ebdf2482/e1f9ba72-dc83-4f20-90cd-07d9d1ee41b3> This long-term effort reflects Wild Fish Conservancy's deep commitment to not only taking on urgent conservation challenges but following them through with persistence, partnership, and resolve. Through our years of research and peer-reviewed and published studies, we know that this passive, live-capture fishing gear allows for the selective harvest of hatchery fish and the release of all wild salmon and steelhead bycatch with post-release survival effect consistently nearing 100% for all adult fall-run Chinook salmon, coho salmon, sockeye salmon, and summer-run steelhead <https://default.salsalabs.org/Tac6ed74b-5150-4277-abe0-003ed3824ae4/e1f9ba72-dc83-4f20-90cd-07d9d1ee41b3> . As fishing begins in the lower Columbia later this month, continued monitoring of this fishery will deepen our understanding of the ecological benefits of fish traps and help to inform policymakers about their economic viability for coastal communities. And this is just the beginning. As local fishers work to revitalize fish traps as a sustainable path forward for wild fish recovery and coastal communities, the emerging fish trap fishery on the lower Columbia River offers a powerful model not only for the Columbia, but across the West Coast. Drawing on years of experience, our staff provides hands-on technical assistance to sustainable-minded fishers seeking to bring fish traps to their communities, helping them overcome barriers related to permitting, engineering, funding, implementation, operations, value-added practices, direct marketing, branding, and sustainable market certification. Wild Fish Conservancy is already partnering with First Nations in British Columbia to construct and operate fish traps in places like the Campbell and Skeena Rivers—and the potential to expand this fishery throughout the region is vast. But we can’t do it alone. We need your support to keep this momentum going. If you believe in this work and want to champion it as we enter a new chapter in wild salmon and steelhead recovery, please consider making a donation today <https://default.salsalabs.org/Te471a404-8 0e4-4be5-8cf4-9c516d359b7f/e1f9ba72-dc83-4f20-90cd-07d9d1ee41b3> . <https://default.salsalabs.org/T57796a79-2044-4a70-8bb7-e10f0acfeff1/e1f9ba72-dc83-4f20-90cd-07d9d1ee41b3> The Fish Trap Journal As commercial fishing begins on the lower Columbia River, Wild Fish Conservancy will be sharing regular updates on this historic fishery.
