A world-acclaimed cellist, composer, and multilingual vocalist, Ian is celebrated for his remarkable ability to sing in 40 languages. In this captivating musical journey across time and space, Maksin blends some of the most diverse sounds in world music into a seamless and soulful fusion, with the cello as the unifying voice. Using a loop pedal and other electronics, he transforms the sound of a single cello into the power and depth of an entire orchestra, creating an unforgettable listening experience. His distinctive style draws on global traditions and genres, weaving them into a heartfelt call for peace on Earth. After years of performing in the classical world—including a three-year tenure with the New World Symphony in Miami—he chose to forge his own musical path, taking the cello into new dimensions and developing a style uniquely his own. This performance features a unique “plant-based” program inspired by the music of composer Victoria Bond. Originally written for harpsichord, these pieces have been reimagined by Terry to make use of the full range of keyboards available at Trinity. The evening will close with Roses and Bach’s Fantasia in C. Terry’s lifelong journey with the organ began at age nine, when she took lessons in a small northern Minnesota town and began playing for local churches and bands. Today, Terry splits her time between music at Trinity Methodist and her textile clients in her studio in the woods of Quilcene, WA. Presented by KPTZ, the concert will also be simulcast on 91.9 FM. Aug 26 Jonathan Evison has been assessing America through novels about working-class folks — home health aides, lawn workers. His 2011 novel West of Here seems most in companionship with his latest, Small World: Both are sprawling sagas with dual timelines that follow late-19th-century Westerners and their contemporary descendants. “Small World” opens with a train accident in 2019. The engineer, Walter Bergen, has had a perfect record until this, the final run of his career. The train, heading to Seattle, is “hurtling toward the unavoidable” — both the inevitable crash and, for Walter, an increasing awareness of that final movement in our lives. As ever, an enjoyable conversation about engaging characters. It’s destined to largely increase the Yard’s capacity and flexibility. The lift was trucked in on nine flat-bed semis from its builders in Sturgeon Bay, Wisconsin. We speak with Justin, the Port’s mechanical engineer, and two factory representatives in charge of re-assembly of this massive machine. Jose’s a classic entrepreneur. He started out as the maintenance guy at the Garden Center and after years of hard work and study he ended up owning the place. He’s been through some challenging times. During the pandemic his main supplier of plant starts and herbs went out of business. So he ended up buying land and erecting a large greenhouse. Now he grows his own. That results in better prices both for him and for his customers. He’s also expanding into landscaping, partnering with his brother. Jose’s insatiable curiosity has led him to read and absorb every label. When it comes to gardens he’s now a finely tuned expert.
