Each year I hike up to the rocky ridge of Liberty Bell in autumn to catch the last fizzing energy of the golden larches and say goodbye for a few months. Knowing that in a few months I’ll be back again on skis, moving through that drawn-breath-stillness and exploring a world reborn. It’s breathtakingly magical up there. This area of Washington Pass is on US Forest Service public land, but it’s also designated as an Inventoried Roadless Area, which (thanks to the Trump Administration) now means it’s at huge risk, along with 2 million acres of Washington’s most beautiful places, and 58 million acres across the country.... This action unilaterally terminated the agreement with the four lower Columbia River Treaty Tribes (Nez Perce, Yakama, Umatilla, and Warm Springs), the states of Washington and Oregon, and 10 NGO plaintiff groups including the Sierra Club, and once again, undermined our federal commitments to Tribal Nations... Today, that foundation is under siege as Trump’s EPA administrator, Lee Zeldin, initiates a concerted effort to rescind it. Such a move would cripple US climate regulation at the very moment scientists warn that time is running out to avoid the worst climate impacts. Read the full article, potential impacts of rescinding the Endangerment Finding, and who stands to benefit at our expense. This decision forces the agency to revisit protections for wolves in eastern Washington and other states—validating our message that state management plans are putting the species at risk. The fight isn’t over, but this is a big step forward. We’ll be working with partners to block any new efforts to strip wolves of protections in Congress or the Washington legislature. Now five Northwest advocacy groups, including the Sierra Club, are saying the decision wasn't not just misguided, but illegal, asking the Ninth Circuit Court of Appeals to review the decision. The lawsuit accuses BPA of violating the Northwest Power Act which directs Bonneville to give to the most cost-effective energy sources. Sierra Club's Robin Everett explained, "The decision... is bad for Northwest ratepayers, our clean energy future, and our environment."
