This blog explores non-monetary strategies for local governments to boost workforce motivation, productivity, and commitment. Employee engagement improves productivity, reduces turnover, and ensures high-quality services. However, Gallup's 2024 Employee Engagement Survey found that only 31% of workers were engaged at work, the same low level as in 2014. Over the 24 years Gallup has conducted the survey, the highest engagement year was 2020, at 36%, and in the subsequent years, that level sunk again. The Heritage Barn Initiative is a grant program of the Washington State Department of Archaeology and Historic Preservation, administered under contract by the Washington Trust. The funding, allocated by the Washington State Legislature as part of the 2025-2027 state budget, marks the tenth round of Heritage Barn Initiative grants. The Heritage Barn Initiative was originally established in 2007, along with the Heritage Barn Register, a statewide list of historically significant barns. Owners of designated heritage barns are eligible to apply for grants to assist with barn stabilization and rehabilitation projects. Approximately $900,000 is available in this grant cycle. Grant awards typically range from $25,000-$40,000, with the maximum eligible grant award capped at $75,000. The deadline to submit applications for Heritage Barn Initiative grants is Sunday, October 19, 2025, at 11:59 pm.
