Today, Washington State’s Commissioner of Public Lands Dave Upthegrove – who Sierra Club members supported and helped advance through last year’s hotly contested primary election – announced that the Department of Natural Resources will set aside 77,000 acres of state trust land designated as mature, legacy forests - including 10,000 acres of future old growth. <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=9c4172b71e744b2decff2808d296181c38f6e4e14fab78ae429bdb9c28a4d7fd9379c3c5af72785b60b982938f0e3dd1a15b78b115e29fca> These forests are our best protection against the ongoing climate crisis. These spaces purify our air by storing and removing carbon from the atmosphere and filter our drinking water through layers of soil, sand, rock, and other natural materials. This announcement isn’t just about protecting these forests from unsustainable logging and clear cuts, it’s an investment in our future here in Washington. Today’s announcement from Commissioner Upthegrove is a significant step towards meeting Sierra Club’s conservation goals, prioritizing preservation over extraction, and separating public school and rural county services funding from timber sales, as DNR explores carbon markets and other innovative approaches to managing these lands and creating value. <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=9c4172b71e744b2d1481f134f5c49e814575127082979dc66d609bf3baf04a4f2680d498cb671090f2c6b3ed3eed75f158b2f2302a7a5274> This achievement, this victory, is truly all of ours. Sierra Club members and supporters across the state showed up like never before for a candidate who was willing to go to the mat for our richest natural areas. One of the single largest conservation efforts in Washington State history wouldn’t have been possible without Commissioner Upthegrove and the advocates who fought to ensure his victory. If you’d like to thank Dave in person, he’s joining our PAC fundraiser on Thursday, September 18th in Seattle. <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=9c4172b71e74 4b2df81d6fdf61c5629b5f7654cd6c2aacbcccefd26d8c2acfa3bf162f6bbc1cec122fdaebb6df99fc3de0f08ebb3202c1f5> But there is still more to do. Sierra Club Washington State is excited to work collaboratively with Commissioner Upthegrove and the Department of Natural Resources in making sure these now protected and other state trust lands continue to be managed under ecological forestry practices. As is often the case, a victory is sometimes just the beginning of the work ahead.
