Wenatchee Sea Trials Happening
Sea trials on the Wenatchee have begun. Investigation by our technicians and engine crew discovered last week the control system communication wires were creating intermittent instability
which caused the drive motors to go offline. While unexpected, issues like this are a normal part of a vessel commissioning which involves rigorous inspection, maintenance and continuous
testing of equipment and systems.
Trial on Updated Pet Policy
On August 20, 2025, Washington State Ferries began a six-month trial allowing leashed dogs in all passenger areas except food galleys. This is a temporary pilot program, running through
February 2026, designed to evaluate whether expanded pet access can be managed in a way that is safe, sanitary, and respectful to all riders. The trial also brings WSF in line with
other regional transit systems that already allow leashed pets, improving consistency for travelers who use multiple modes of transportation.
The program is intended to address recurring issues, including:
* Pet safety: In hot weather or during long waits, remaining in a vehicle can be unsafe for animals. Controlled access to passenger spaces offers a safer alternative.
* Inclement weather: Walk-on passengers with pets will be able to shelter indoors rather than expecting them to remain outside for the entire crossing.
* Consistency and enforcement: Previous policies were confusing and inconsistently applied. The trial establishes clear, uniform rules for passengers and staff.

Completed Sailings
For the week of Aug 18 – August 24 – we completed 98.88% of our 3,124 scheduled sailings. Of the 38 cancellations, 55% (21) were due to schedule resets (when a boat is so far behind
schedule, we cancel a sailing to get it back on schedule, providing predictability for customers), 21% (8) were due to tidal currents, 11% (4) were due to crewing, 11% (4) were due
to vessel-related issues, and 3% (1) was due to other miscellaneous reasons.
For comparison, during a similar period last year (August 19–25, 2024), we completed 98.02% of our 2,829 scheduled sailings. Of the 58 cancellations, 43% (25) were due to schedule resets,
28% (16) were due to crewing, 16% (9) were due to other miscellaneous reasons, and 14% (8) were due to tidal currents.
Customer Service Alerts
For the week of Aug 18 - Aug. 24 - our customer service team sent 232 rider alerts, received 4,016 customer calls, and fielded more than 191 written comments and emails related to reservations,
schedules, and fares.

Vessel Availability
We have now fully implemented our 18-vessel service this summer, allowing us to return to almost full domestic service – three years earlier than originally planned:
The reality of adding service: We’ll need to crew three more daily boats for this added service. While we've done a lot of hiring and career development in recent years, we will have
fewer available relief crew members. This could mean more cancellations due to a shortage of crew.
Hybrid Conversions/New Vessels/Terminal Electrification
New Vessels – Governor Bob Ferguson selected the $714.5 million bid from Florida-based Eastern Shipbuilding Group to build three new 160-vehicle hybrid-electric ferries. We will move
forward with the contracting process, following the first competitive bid for ferry construction in more than 25 years.
Terminal Electrification – Vessel charging system proposals have been reviewed and an award announcement is expected soon.
