Dear county commissioners,
I was instructed by Heidi to ask Greg for temporary speed limit signs in town (Quilcene) until the completion of the complete the streets project. Since 101 is a state road, I am also
requesting that you act on behalf of the community as a liaison to communicate with the state to help us in obtaining temporary speed limit signs in town.
I would also like to request affordable, temporary structures like plastic speed bumps or speed tables to be considered in an effort to reduce speeding until the completion of the quilcene
complete the streets project. There are many folks in the community who have literally told me they would put their own money towards these measures if the county would just allow them.
Since nothing has been done by the county in the last several years to lower the speeds (referring to permanent fixtures or temporary signs, not any additional police presence over the
yrs- I have noticed more people getting pulled over, thank you jeffco police), I’m currently in the process of making signs and buying signs to hand out to folks who are willing to
put them in their yard. Additionally, I will be buying a speed gun and safety vest and sitting in various areas in town to document all speeders. We as a community are in the process
of creating a group to ensure that we have the highest chance of having our voices heard by the county to actually stop the speeding. I will go door to door to provide information/gather
signatures/gather input and preferences/ask them to contact yall, etc and will provide this information to the county and escalate to the state or whatever other outlet if that is what
is needed to actually resolve the speeding issue in town. The record shows that all of these things have already been attempted over the years, and still no change, which ultimately
is just more documentation of the longstanding efforts that have gone unheard by the county.
I saw someone die in a 30mph zone in Quilcene right in front of the school because they sped through town. Their passenger died only months later. This happened in 2018, which was also
when the last update for the complete streets project was posted on the county website. every single person on center and 101 in town can give you accounts of dangerous situations and
near misses because of reckless speeding. All we want is to feel safe which means there needs to be an effective system to ensure people are going the speed limit.
Thank you
Sunny
