HomeMy WebLinkAbout091525 - Press Release_ Port Hadlock Wastewater Treatment System is Up and RunningGood afternoon, Jefferson County, WA – Jefferson County announces the launch of the Port Hadlock Wastewater Treatment System. As of September 8, 2025, residents and businesses in Port Hadlock are beginning to connect to the system and their septic systems are being decommissioned, allowing for use of previously encumbered land. Furthermore, once connected to the sewer, a parcel can potentially take advantage of urban zoning rather than the more restrictive transitional rural zoning allowed with septic systems. Urban zoning applies to parcels within 200 feet of the newly installed sewer line. Sewer service for those properties is considered “available” per the Port Hadlock Urban Growth Area (UGA) sanitary sewer service development requirements in Section 18.18.060(4) Jefferson County Code (JCC <https://www.codepublishing.com/WA/JeffersonCounty/#!/JeffersonCounty18/JeffersonCounty1818.h tml> ); the definition of sewer availability in Section 13.02.010 JCC <https://test.co.jefferson.wa.us/WeblinkExternal/DocView.aspx?id=10139262&dbid=0&repo=Jefferson> ; and the table addressing when connection to the sewer system is required in Section 13.04.010 JCC <https://test.co.jefferson.wa.us/WeblinkExternal/DocView.aspx?id=10139262&dbid=0&repo=Jefferson> . This will enable more business and residential development within this area. Future extension of the sewer to other areas within the established UGA is possible. District 2 County Commissioner Heidi Eisenhour, Chair of the Board of Commissioners, reflects, “We owe a lot of thanks to our state delegation, especially Representative Tharinger in his role as chair of the State Capital Budget Committee; our federal delegation, both Senators Cantwell and Murray and Representative Kilmer and Randall; former County Commissioner Kate Dean and Public Works Director Monte Reinders; as well as Wastewater Project Manager, Samantha Harper, who have all been key members of the team in the long path that led to the sewer being turned on last week.” A celebration is planned for early November.
