OUR WORKING WATERFRONT Tuesday @ 5:30pm and Sunday @ Noon Alternates with Community Tides Each month KPTZ’s Chris Bricker joins Co-Hosts Port of Port Townsend’s Director Eron Berg, and Port Commissioner Pam Petranek to bring you news, updates and stories surrounding our vibrant maritime community. Sep 23 / 28 Our community lost a beloved fisherman at sea this August. Joel Kawahara left his hometown of Quilcene on his salmon troller, the F/V Karolee for the fishing grounds about 40 miles west of Neah Bay, but not to return. In Joel’s honor we’ll reprise an interview from April of 2022, when Karolee had been hauled out for maintenance and repairs in our boatyard. Kawahara was widely known as an advocate for sustainable fisheries and habitat restoration. Joel never quite fit in the corporate world, but his credentials, talents, and caring nature were a catalyst for bringing disparate interests to the table in order to affect significant change in our fisheries. For years, Bernie Arthur, retired maritime tradesman, has had the vision of creating a memorial for those of our community lost at sea. Joel Kawahara has once again catalyzed a dream, even in his passing. Chris, Pam and Eron join Bernie Arthur, along with collaborator Pete Langley of the Port Townsend Foundry, near the proposed Memorial’s sight. With anticipated support from the Port and our community, installation is set for 2026 at the Point Hudson Breakwater Walkway. <https://mcusercontent.com/6df05bfd2eaa0ab6bf92aa5cf/images/375e63f8-5f3a-a217-ae9a-f504011634b0.png> COMMUNITY TIDES Tuesday @ 5:30pm and Sunday @ Noon Alternates with Our Working Waterfront KPTZ’s Chris Bricker, and Siobhan Canty, President & CEO of Jefferson Community Foundation, explore new paradigms and new developments from our County’s good people doing good work. Sep 16 /21/ 30 Today’s youth truly do face a brave new world, where a sense of community and caring for one another will be paramount. Growing and becoming independent, becoming equipped to face the perils of loneliness and the joy of engagement, authenticity, trust, and independence is what an organization called OWL 360 is all about. OWL 360’s Assistant Director Zhaleh Almaee joins us today to tell us more. DONN AT NIGHT with host Donn Trethewey Tuesday 6:30-8pm Donn At Night features pieces from Donn Trethewey’s collection of music — same as the old Cardboard Box program. <https://mcusercontent.com/6df05bfd2eaa0ab6bf92aa5cf/images/cf7ebf3f-5097-4655-756c-f0a4cac25976.jpg> JAZZ NOTES with host Bill Mercier Tuesday 8-10pm Sept 16 It’s our 500th Jazz Notes Show on KPTZ and to celebrate we’ll start the show with the same song we used to start show #1 over 10 years ago, La Ronde by the Modern Jazz Quartet. We’ll also be hearing from artists like Billie Holiday, Count Basie, Terri Lyne Carrington and the Art Ensemble of Chicago. Our “What’s New?” album for this week is People & Places by piano man Marc Seals together with saxophonist Ernie Watts. We’ll hear three cuts from that one. On our "Today in Jazz" feature we’ll celebrate the birthday of vocalist Jon Hendricks with three cuts from him. Sept 23 We’ve got post-bop from Hank Mobley, nice piano from Olga Konkova and Mose Allison, old time stuff from Frankie Trumbauer and Louis Armstrong and much more. This week’s “What’s New?” feature will take a look at the new release The Hat With the Grin and the Chuckle by vibraphonist and bandoneon player Ben Thomas fusing jazz with a touch of tango. Our “Today in Jazz” feature celebrates the 99th birthday of jazz legend John Coltrane. We’ll hear three of his best. Sept 30 We’ll be hearing from jazz greats like Milt Jackson, Winton Marsalis and Duke Ellington as well as lesser known artists like Lage Lund and Per Mathisen. On “What’s New?” for this week we’ll hear three cuts from the new release Countryside Motorways by the group Zurhub and on our “Today in Jazz Feature we’ll celebrate the birthday of the great jazz drummer Buddy Rich with three cuts from him. <https://mcusercontent.com/6df05bfd2eaa0ab6bf92aa5cf/images/fe3793aa-3be3-1ba8-4c80-30c0c990e8be.jpg> OUR TOWN with host Maryanne McNellis Alternating Tuesdays and repeats the following Sunday, both 12:30-1pm Sep 16/21 Maryanne interviews DANIEL FERLAND, music teacher & founder of YeaMusic, the popular summer music camps for kids. Daniel’s passion for music has now been passed on to Port Townsend & Chimacum students for close to two decades. Against all odds and under Daniel’s direction those bands tell a David + Goliath story — consistently winning awards in competition with much larger high schools. Last summer’s camps were almost cancelled due to the sweeping cuts in arts funding by the Trump administration. First Federal Bank and the Jefferson County Foundation stepped in with grants at the very last moment and saved the camps. But the group rather desperately needs your donations. Go to yeamusic.org <https://kptz.us10.list-manage.com/track/clic k?u=6df05bfd2eaa0ab6bf92aa5cf&id=fc5aa52c5d&e=eba4e3a8b6> to donate — by the way, YeaMusic is an acronym for “youth education in the arts.” Sep 30 and Oct 5 Maryanne interviews JOSHUA BINGHAM, aka “The Large Man of PT.” Joshua is indeed a very large man physically. He also likes helping people. He was employed as a caretaker for mentally challenged clients for a few years. But he was always available to help people move furniture and other bulky items. At some point it occurred to him that he could find more satisfaction and make a better income specializing in moving. So he started a company called The Large Man of PT. It’s a huge success with our senior population. Ten months of the year he’s here serving people who badly need help moving and/or downsizing. Here’s the twist: for two months of the year he goes to Tibet where he works with village elders to build schools or orphanages. Years ago he discovered that a lot of money donated to orphanages in Tibet never made it to the needy - the cash lined the pockets of many officials instead. Joshua’s a man of action so he decided to somehow get 100% of his funds to the needy. Each week, Producer Chris Bricker brings you an enticing installment from Bill’s series that we’re calling A Journey Along the Silk Road. So, sit back, enjoy, and lose yourself in the mystery of the Silk Road! Sept 16 / 19 Episode 88 We’re at Gansu Province at Yanguan Pass. Until modern times the Pass marked the westernmost outpost of the Chinese empire. One such attempt to further extend their dominion to the west was the establishment of Loulan, 400 kilometers to the west, in the middle of the forbidding waste of the Lop Desert. Two Buddhist travelers, as well as Marco Polo were successful in crossing this landscape, though all three were convinced the desert was haunted…. Sep 23 / 26 Episode 89 We’re viewing the surrounding desert from the summit of Yanguan Pass in Gansu Province. Somewhere beyond the northern horizon was a second outpost, Yumenguan, or Jade Gate Pass, through which some of China’s finest jade traveled from the kingdom of Khotan. The people of Khotan also had an equal passion for fine silk. As the story goes, it took a clever Princess to bring the secret of silk making from China to the rest of the world…. Sep 30 Episode 90 We’re in Gansu Province, and we’ve just watched the secret of silk leave China in a woman’s hairdo through Jade Gate Pass. From there the secret traveled through the Lop Desert on the southern branch of the silk road to the kingdom of Khotan, and from there on to India. But most travelers avoided this branch of the Silk Road. Even today the road constantly gets lost among the constantly shifting desert sands. From Jade Gate Pass, most travelers took the route north, through the Malhuyen Desert, including the famous Chinese monk Xuanzang….
