Differences Bring us Together
This month I have been reflecting on just how different all us people are. We like different things, we invest our energy in different ways, we have different priorities — and really
we're all better off because of it.
Differences can certainly be dividers or flash points, but better outcomes are when differences motivate us, expand our understanding of life, or deepen our experience with the world.
As festival season winds down, it is a good time to recognize the sheer variety of events and happenings here in Jefferson County. Each one supported by enthusiastic members of our
community and attracting their unique crowd of onlookers; no two occasions representing the same groups of people. Just these last few weeks we saw Live Life Loud at the Quilcene Lantern

st-manage.com/track/click?u=38123e1ad2608f9c4e51e6660&id=28d771cf3c&e=b56e9d81e8> and the Jefferson County Farm Tour <https://housingsolutionsnetwork.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=38123e1ad2608f
9c4e51e6660&id=e5ffa0e51a&e=b56e9d81e8> . Starting tomorrow the Port Townsend Film Festival <https://housingsolutionsnetwork.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=38123e1ad2608f9c4e51e6660&id=b30e03a505
&e=b56e9d81e8> kicks off — which I mention largely to plug the locally made film Michael and Damian <https://housingsolutionsnetwork.us17.list-manage.com/track/click?u=38123e1ad2608f9c4e51e6660&id=d
a6f87cdb5&e=b56e9d81e8> , a documentary touching on the struggles and realities of the unhoused in Jefferson County.
A few years back I distinctly remember biking to Rhody Fest and upon seeing a friend biking the opposite direction I yell out "you're going the wrong way!" to which they replied "no
you are!". I love the paradox of that moment, because there was truth in both our answers. What might attract one person may repel another, and there is identity and value in each those
positions. Personally I am trying to celebrate that dichotomy more. Our differences are what make us human, for a march toward sameness wouldn't make any of us feel more alive.
So how do we better accommodate each other’s differences especially when they feel in direct conflict with our ourselves? Well that is a difficult one to answer and not one I can claim
to know the answer. For me I am trying to dwell less on frustration and redirect more toward empathy. That doesn't mean backing down from what I believe in, but it does mean sometimes
I make adjustments to my stance and I hope sometimes I have the same effect on others as well.

Comprehensive Plan Updates
Go ahead, submit your guesses for the final page count of the Port Townsend and Jefferson County updated Comp Plans. To put you in the ballpark, the previous versions were 129 and 400
pages respectively, and that doesn't include the 100s of pages in appendices. I'm sure I can dig up some HSN swag for anyone who gets it on the nose.
By my estimates there have been at least 60 public meetings relating to the Comprehensive Plan Periodic Update since the beginning of 2023 and it's probably best we didn't know the number
of staff and consultant hours dedicated to this project. Though this is not a dig on how public funds are spent, but rather highlighting what is involved in creating this legally required
document. However, spoiler alert, not everyone is going to like it, at least not all of it, but that would be an impossible task. Of course you saw this coming because you read the
opening letter.
A Comprehensive Plan is an attempt at a collective effort to chart our best course forward. Is it perfect? No. Will it get everything right? Absolutely not. But it gets us pointed in
a direction that begins to address major issues impacting our community. These issues are denoted by the element titles: Housing, Land Use, Economic Development, etc.
Drafts of these comprehensive plan elements are beginning to filter up to City Council and County Commissioner meetings. Until now the majority of word-smithing has been done by staff
and volunteer advisory boards. These next few months will have some exciting discussions determining what will stick and what goes out the window — reminder, my interpretation of exciting
might be different than yours 😉. Be on the lookout for correspondence from HSN about when and where your voice could make a difference in supporting housing affordability.
