Last week in Congress was a busy one — committee hearings, markups, and floor votes kept us hard at work. Here’s a look at what you might have missed: GOP Forcing a Very Bad, No Good, CR Last week, House Republicans advanced a continuing resolution (CR) that does nothing to lower health care costs, address inflation, or reinstitute public broadcasting funding. I voted NO because I cannot in good conscience support the continuation of the status quo –– raising health care costs for my constituents and not instituting guardrails to prevent the Trump Administration from illegally withholding congressionally appropriated funds. I will always vote to protect families, lower costs, and expand access to care. Fighting for the Rights of Local Governments At an Oversight Committee hearing discussing the Trump Administration’s takeover of the District of Columbia, I spoke out against proposals to deploy the National Guard in our cities under the guise of public safety. We know there are proven, community-based solutions to reduce crime. Yet earlier this year, Republicans arbitrarily cut $1 billion from the D.C. budget — jeopardizing funding for police, firefighters, and other vital safety programs. These actions are unlawful, undemocratic, and follow the playbook of authoritarian governments. I will continue fighting against this dangerous overreach. New Bill Alert: Indian Trust Asset Reform Amendment Act I am proud to co-lead the Indian Trust Asset Reform Amendment Act (ITARA) with Congressman Hurd (CO-03). This bill would give Tribal Nations more authority to manage their own trust assets — an essential step toward self-determination. It’s long past time we remove federal barriers and allow Tribes to exercise the sovereignty they are owed. Celebrating at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute Gala To kick off Hispanic Heritage Month, I joined my colleagues at the Congressional Hispanic Caucus Institute Gala. It was an evening filled with music, laughter, and celebration of community and culture. Hispanic voices will never be silenced, and I will continue fighting in Congress to ensure community members are heard and respected. Town Hall Alert!
