When times are tough and the challenges we face feel overwhelming, it helps to remember that every one of us has the power to make a difference – both large and small – for the people
around us.
And as a community, our potential to make change collectively is even greater.
That’s what we saw firsthand last month as members of the Solid Ground community gathered at sites across Seattle to build a stronger, more joyful community for our neighbors through
our Day of Service. <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=5c7ec287a4&e=b80de0d97c> For the second year in a row, hundreds of people signed
up to take time out of their Friday to clean up and improve parks, weed and harvest vegetable patches, and freshen up the fleet of paratransit buses we use to make sure everyone in
Seattle is able to get where they need to go, regardless of their health or mobility.

Dozens of families, individuals, and corporate groups spent a sunny morning building connections and community at three Solid Ground sites:

the South Park community and teaches local children about food systems.
* Solid Ground Transportation <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=fddd1abea6&e=b80de0d97c> ’s bus yard, where we store, maintain, and
dispatch our fleet of ACCESS buses <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=d9b8a1d174&e=b80de0d97c> .
* Magnuson Park, where Solid Ground’s Sand Point Housing <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=ba155e42bd&e=b80de0d97c> provides a stable
home and ongoing support for hundreds of individuals and families moving beyond homelessness.
In all, volunteers harvested more than 200 pounds of produce, cleaned 27 buses, and spread countless wheelbarrow loads of mulch!

HopeSource aims for affordability in Downtown Ellensburg with new apartment complex

HopeSource <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=ae2d4a6d24&e=b80de0d97c> , a social services organization in Kittitas County, has one
critical mission in everything that they do, affordability.
The grand opening of Addison Place Apartments provides what the organizations says is a safe, stable and beautiful option for homeowners looking to live the downtown lifestyle.
"HopeSource believes that affordability does not have to mean substandard housing," said HopeSource CEO, Susan Grindle. "It can be clean, safe and beautiful, and this place is a visible
example of dignity in housing."
The construction of the property came in a collaboration between HopeSource, the City of Ellensburg, Kittitas County and several local organizations.
"We hope that we see many more of these collaborations in the future," Grindle said. "Lots will buildings like this can be added so much faster than the big tax credit properties."
Affordable housing in downtown areas is hard to find, and HopeSource aims to provide that.
"It will be significant in that it centers people close to the city center," Grindle said.
Grindle says that the homes could be of a higher standard than anything their incoming residents have ever lived in.

District Court hosts Drug Conviction Relief Day

Grays Harbor County District Court will host a Blake Refund Day on Sept. 30 to implement the requirements of the landmark Washington State Supreme Court decision in State v. Blake.
In 2021, the Supreme Court ruled that Washington’s then-liability drug possession statute was unconstitutional, which impacted thousands of convictions statewide. As part of the effort
to comply with this ruling, Grays Harbor County District Court will vacate approximately 2,100 affected cases and the state of Washington will refund roughly $500,000 in legal financial
obligations to eligible individuals.
“This event is a critical step in ensuring justice is restored to people impacted by the unconstitutional statute,” said Judge Megan Valentine, presiding judge of Grays Harbor County
District Court. “Our court has worked diligently to identify cases, set the refund process in motion, and make sure those entitled to relief receive it. It’s the court’s responsibility,
and privilege, to help restore fairness and provide real relief to those impacted.”

On October 7th from 6:00-8:00pm, we will be renaming our Rainier Vista site The Wilcox Center in honor of Shirley and Louis Wilcox. Shirley was Neighborhood House’s first Black Board
President in 1954 and a key leader in our partnership with Seattle Housing Authority. Louis was a music teacher who founded the Neighborhood House Band in the 1950s, giving at-risk
youth opportunities to perform and build community through music.
We’ll be gathering with residents, volunteers, and community partners to celebrate their lasting legacy and the values they embodied—compassion, equity, and courage.

Building in Seattle. Several awards will be presented at the event.
An annual celebration for El Centro de la Raza falls on a significant day this year.
The annual Building the Beloved Community Gala coincides with El Centro de la Raza’s 53rd anniversary of the peaceful occupation that founded the organization.
The nonprofit's program manager, Anica Enriquez, stopped by the KING 5 studios to talk about the gala and how meaningful it is to celebrate the milestone on the exact day the mission
began on Oct. 11, 1972.

Dire Underfunding: Providers Can Only House 8 Percent of Homeless People

The federal government does not allocate nearly enough funding to meet the nationwide demand for permanent housing. On the day of the 2024 Point-in-Time Count, there was only enough
permanent housing available to house 8 percent of people experiencing homelessness in the United States. (see chart below)
Federal investments in the Continuum of Care (CoC) Program can help to close this gap, as they did from 2019–2022. During the COVID-19 pandemic, the federal government increased emergency
resources to homeless services and the response system’s permanent housing capacity increased significantly: from 5.8 percent capacity in 2020 to 12 percent capacity in 2022. This was
especially true in certain states that rely more on federal funds; however, the increase in capacity ended with the expiration of federal funds.
As Congress currently considers funding levels for FY2026, they must maximize investments in the CoC program, which helps to fund permanent units in the homelessness response system.

Commerce is accepting applications from qualified organizations for grant funding to purchase and distribute diapers, wipes, and other essential baby products to families in need.
Priority will be given to providers serving or located in marginalized, low-income communities or communities of color. Priority will also be given to providers that help support racial
equity.
Grants and funding
Individual award amounts may vary based on proposed impact, geographic coverage and demonstrated need. Applications are limited to $125,000 each fiscal year or $250,000 total.

29&e=b80de0d97c> on Saturday that it will end a longstanding annual food insecurity survey, calling it "redundant, costly, politicized, and extraneous."
The Household Food Security Report provides yearly data on the lack of access to adequate nutrition for low-income Americans, and helps shape policy on how to combat food insecurity
and hunger.
The USDA's announcement comes after Trump signed the One Big Beautiful Bill Act into law this summer, which expands the work requirements for the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program,
or SNAP. This, in effect, will leave an estimated 2.4 million Americans <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&id=fed5c76bd0&e=b80de0d97c>
without food aid.
"The national food insecurity survey is a critical, reliable data source that shows how many families in America struggle to put food on the table," Crystal FitzSimons, president of
the Food Research and Action Center (FRAC) told NPR. FRAC is an anti-hunger organization that advocates for food security in the U.S.
FitzSimons said that without the annual report, advocates and policymakers won't have a clear lens on the scale of hunger in America, and how to prevent it.
"Without that data, we are flying blind, and we don't know the impact," FitzSimons said.

Food is an essential human need, and even more so for infants and toddlers during the critical early months of rapid growth and development. The United States has the resources to ensure
everyone has enough to eat. Yet millions of people across the U.S. experience food insecurity, meaning they struggle to afford enough food for an active, healthy life year-round. In
2023, the most recent data available, 33.6 million adults and 13.8 million children — including nearly 2 million children under 3 years old — lived in food-insecure households, meaning
more than 1 in 8 households (13.5 percent) in the U.S. had difficulty acquiring food due to lack of resources.[1] <https://wapartnership.us4.list-manage.com/track/click?u=acf3cee5bbda818ebd4ce40eb&i

Households with young children are more likely to experience food insecurity. More than 1 in 7 (15.5 percent) households with infants and toddlers under 3 were food insecure in 2023,

in 2023 and this share varies across states. (See Table 1.) These shares also vary by race and ethnicity, with children under 3 in American Indian or Alaska Native (30.3 percent), Hawaiian

of Labor, Health and Human Services, and Education is language rescinding $11.7 billion from the IRS’s operations budget, which had been provided by 2022’s Inflation Reduction Act (IRA).
In the spring, the Republicans succeeded in eliminating virtually all the $45.6 billion provided by the IRA for tax enforcement against high-income tax cheats. Having completed that
mission, they are now moving on to attack the funding for IRS operations, which affects everyone trying to file their taxes.
To find our way out of this mess, we need to understand how we got here.
