Public invited to provide feedback on draft Canyon Environmental Assessment

QUILCENE, Wash., September 26, 2025 — The Forest Service will start accepting public input on the draft Canyon Forest Restoration Project Environmental Assessment (proposed project)
on October 15th, 2025. The project proposes to restore parts of the Dungeness River watershed located south of Sequim, WA in the northeast portion of the Olympic National Forest.
The proposed actions are intended to promote complex forest structure, accelerate the development of late-successional forest characteristics, and develop diverse wildlife habitats by
thinning forest stands, while contributing to the economic viability of local communities through timber sales. Commercial thinning would occur on approximately 1,840 acres and other
treatments would occur on approximately 320 acres.
Additionally, the proposed project could reduce the severity of potential wildfires, replace culverts that are barriers to fish passage with larger aquatic organism passages, and prepare
roads to support logging equipment and hauling.
The proposed project was developed from a detailed project proposal that was published for scoping in 2022. The draft Environmental Assessment includes the results of additional field
work, consideration of comments and documents, and anticipated effects of the proposed actions.

Public comments will help inform the Forest Service’s final decision on the project proposal. Only those who submit timely, project-specific written comments during the public comment
period will be eligible to file an objection to the final decision. Comments will be accepted until November 14, 2025.
