(ECY) Subject:Jefferson County SMP Attachments:HamaHama1973-29.pdf Importance:High Categories:LASMP Public Comment Dear Mr. Stewart, As a shoreline property owner in Jefferson County, I fully support the Shoreline Master Program approved by our county commissioners. I trust that Ecology will take the long term view that protects our precious shorelines and ignore the fear-based hysteria that was obvious at the public hearing. I am particularly interested in the prohibitions placed on mining related operations on our shoreline. There should be no place for industrial harbor complexes to load and ship aggregate or other mining products to distant markets. Not only would this permanently spoil the shoreline, threaten water quality and destroy essential habitat; it would also be accompanied by massive strip mining within our watershed. I am attaching the landmark 1976 Shoreline Hearings Board decision on the Hama Hama pit-to-pier project. Please make this available to all who will ultimately approve the Jefferson County SMP. Please pay particular attention to the Hearings Board rationale for revoking the Mason County permit. This is well outlined in CONCLUSIONS OF LAW. The Shoreline Hearings Board recognized the enormous negative impacts of the Hama Hama shoreline mining operations that consisted of a large pier to accommodate the loading of barges. Our commissioners, and the 1 citizens of Jefferson County, do not want this kind of facility on the shoreline of Jefferson County. We are currently fighting the Fred Hill Materials pit-to-pier project which is grandfathered under the existing SMP. Nearly 4000 citizens are part of the grassroots organization opposing the project. More than 60 independent organizations oppose it. This includes tribes, political parties in 3 counties, environmental groups, businesses and communities. The opposition also includes 2 US congressmen, a US senator, and state and county representatives. If we are fortunate enough to stop this project, we would like to know that our new SMP will protect our shorelines in the future. Thank you for your consideration and the opportunity to comment.
