Do not open attachments or click on links if you are not expecting them. Greetings, As we celebrate the 50th anniversary of Monitor National Marine Sanctuary <https://monitor.noaa.gov/> , NOAA is pleased to announce a groundbreaking collaboration between NOAA's Office of National Marine Sanctuaries and Northrop Grumman. This initiative is set to revolutionize our understanding and preservation of the iconic USS Monitor shipwreck. Through its Technology for Conservation (T4C) initiative <https://www.northropgrumman.com/sustainability/technology-for-conservation> , Northrop Grumman is deploying an Autonomous Underwater Vehicle (AUV) equipped with cutting-edge technology to generate high-resolution imagery of the USS Monitor site – the first fine-scale sonar scans ever produced there. This data will transform how the public explores and connects with this historic site. This mission highlights how the National Marine Sanctuary System partners with the private sector to advance scientific knowledge and develop new technologies. The project partners are planning a public open house and media day this winter at The Mariners' Museum and Park to display the AUV and share the new data and graphics. This will be a significant opportunity for the public and media to engage with the project. All the data will also be posted on the ONMS website, ensuring widespread access to these incredible new insights. Today, USS Monitor is a bridge to our past and future. While Monitor’s military service was brief, its ironclad legacy is permanent. By using innovative technologies, the sanctuary and its partners are providing access to Monitor’s heritage in ways never before imagined, inspiring the next generation of marine scientists, archaeologists, historians, and educators for decades to come.
