At midnight tonight, Republicans will shut down the federal government at the expense of you, your families, and all of our neighbors in Washington’s 6th. Federal workers will miss paychecks, services will be disrupted, and essential programs like housing assistance and nutrition benefits will be put at risk. Every year, Congress must pass full-year spending bills by September 30th to keep the government open. When Congress can’t finish negotiating those bills before the deadline, Congress must pass a temporary funding bill known as a continuing resolution to maintain existing funding levels until the full-year funding bills are finished. Without the passage of a funding bill, the government shuts down. For decades, both parties have worked together in good faith to get it done. What’s different this time? Republicans passed a partisan budget (H.R. 1 or the Big Ugly Bill), that gutted health care access and affordability. They’ve created a crisis. When thousands of our neighbors go to sign up for health insurance this fall, their health care premiums will spike –– in some cases an increase of 65%. The partisan funding bill that Republicans put forward does nothing to address this affordability crisis, which is why I voted against it. Democrats put forward a responsible plan: protecting health care programs like Medicaid, permanently extending the ACA tax credits, restoring funding for housing, education, and public broadcasting, and creating new safeguards to prevent future abuse of taxpayer dollars. Without these provisions, this lawless administration will continue to illegally withhold funds that our communities are depending on –– like the FEMA Building Resilient Infrastructure and Communities funding for the Cities of Aberdeen and Hoquiam North Shore Levee Project –– and our rural hospitals will have to make incredibly difficult decisions about cutting critical services, like OB/GYN and maternity care. Our plan lowers costs and strengthens the safety net families count on. Instead of showing up for regular Americans, Speaker Johnson and Republican leadership canceled votes, skipped town, and walked away from the table. And worse, the Administration has directed agencies to prepare mass firing plans if a shutdown happens — threatening hardworking public servants to try to force through cuts to health care and vital services. These are authoritarian tactics that hurt families and destabilize our communities. I’ve been clear: any proposal that takes an axe to essential programs is a non-starter. If Republicans and the Trump Administration were serious about supporting the people they represent, they wouldn’t waste time with partisan bills that hurt working families. Democrats are ready to govern responsibly. We are ready to negotiate in good faith. The only thing standing between the American people and a shutdown is Republican obstruction. When they’re ready to meet, I’m ready to talk. I’m hosting a telephone town hall tomorrow, on Day 1 of this Republican Shutdown. I want to hear from you directly. How are you impacted? What do you want your member of congress to know? Please RSVP here. <https://iqconnect.house.gov/iqextranet/iqClickTrk.aspx?&cid=WA06ER&crop=14327.5765716.5228019.7707228&report_id=&redirect=https%3a%2f%2fiqconnect.house.gov%2fiqextranet%2fEF orm.aspx%3f__cid%3dWA06ER%26__fid%3d100023%26iframe%3dY%2522&redir_log=769779124612617> I look forward to speaking with you. – Emily P.S.
