Come by the Center and welcome her to our organization. When you look at the clouds, the mountains, and the bodies of water, you can see the great diversity that Washington has to offer. It is the most beautiful example that gives us the reflection of ourselves as a community and as human beings. Everyone comes from different backgrounds and for that very reason this country becomes unique. I witnessed that in my hometown of New York. Growing up there taught me a lot of culture, hope, and strength. That's why I decided to participate in this work experience with JCIRA to unify Jefferson and Clallam counties. By participating in this position as the Multicultural Center Administrator, I would like to use the available resources to remove fear from our immigrant communities. I no longer want fear to overcome people's hope. While the U.S. government logs every individual immigration action, this information is difficult to navigate and use for a number of reasons. With the goal of providing transparency around the government’s deportation data and actions, UC Berkeley School of Law has recently launched an open online repository: The Deportation Data Project <https://jcira.us12.list-manage.com/trac k/click?u=e6a5ce9c533fce19d6336ca83&id=3debc5385e&e=e9fe4694e3> . The project works to addresses key challenges to understanding deportation actions from multiple enforcement agencies at regular intervals, linking data across agencies, collecting associated government data and documentation, and sharing that information through an open-source portal. A deportation case typically starts with the initial arrest. Each part of the deportation process is trackable from three agencies: Customs and Border Protection (CBP), Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE), and the Executive Office for Immigration Review (EOIR). Unfortunately, the EOIR, ICE and CBP datasets are currently not linked. By cross-referencing previously siloed agency records, it can be possible to track an individual’s path from arrest to detention to deportation. By launching the Deportation Data Project, the hope is that the information collected by multiple agencies can now be used by the public, journalists, lawyers and immigrant rights advocates to track individual cases and to bring to light the multiple actions and decisions involved in national deportation practices. Here she provides an overview of all of the work JCIRA is doing to support the legal rights of our immigrant community. It can be extremely difficult to find trustworthy and quality immigration legal representation, especially for low-to-moderate income individuals and families. Most immigration legal services organizations are extremely overwhelmed by requests for help, and the cost of a private attorney can be devastating for many families. In the United States, 58 percent of people facing deportation <https://jcira.us12.list-manage.com/track/click?u=e6a5ce9c533fce19d6336ca83&id=f8b24a58fb&e=e9fe4694e3> in immigration court lack legal counsel; for those facing deportation, securing legal representation can be even more challenging. Through my new position at JCIRA as Legal Coordinator, I have been working to support individuals and families to find immigration legal services through partnerships, creativity and persistence! We now host regular, free immigration law clinics, and have an accompaniment program and staff trained to teach “Know Your Rights” clinics to immigrant community members and allies. Read on to learn more about these programs! To overcome some of the systemic hurdles that make accessing legal services challenging, we have been strengthening our partnership with Kitsap Immigrant Assistance Center (KIAC), which operates a satellite office in Port Townsend, offering free/low cost immigration legal services to the Olympic Peninsula community. The KIAC Legal Team also comes to the JCIRA office four times a year to provide free immigration legal consultations to the community in an all day event! We are proud to have also partnered with the Northwest Immigrant Rights Project, the University of Washington Law School, Kids in Need of Defense (KIND), and Al Otro Lado in San Diego/Tijuana to help provide legal services to immigrants in our community. We have also been building an Accompaniment Program through a partnership with the Jewish Coalition for Immigrant Justice (JCIJ) and the Washington Immigrant Solidarity Network (WAISN). Our accompaniment volunteers walk alongside immigrants as they navigate a complicated, often intimidating system. We accompany people to their ICE check-ins, immigration court hearings - anything where extra support can be helpful. We also have been doing “Know Your Rights” trainings across the Olympic Peninsula. Training in Resistance to ICE Activity Are you interested in learning more about what you can do to fight back against ICE? On Sunday October 19, a local organizer is holding a training session from 3-6 PM at the Quimper Unitarian Universalist Fellowship (2333 San Juan Ave). This training is offered by the Let's Go! / ¡Vámonos! network and facilitated by Guy, a grassroots activist and organizer for two decades, living in Jefferson County. Let's Go! is building a network of trainers and support for resistance in local struggles, helping groups develop the tools, structures, and skills they need for this historic moment. Here is Guy’s description of the 3-hour training session: Maybe you are someone who wants to do something but don’t know where to start, or maybe you are a seasoned organizer and your local ICE struggles have hit obstacles that feel insurmountable. That’s where this training comes in. We believe we can win against ICE but it will take new tactics and strategies, experimentation, and sharing what works across regional and national networks. Please join us for a 3-hour training that gives people the political and relational tools to win by creating broad-based, popular struggle against ICE. These tools include relational and compositional skills, lessons in how to be effective in spaces with many different protagonists, and how to keep often very different groups together enough to be successful in our fights. We'll share these tools, as well as a full array of tactics gleaned from successful anti-ICE networks around the country. We will help participants understand the range of tactics and practice how to select and pivot depending on local contexts, and will discuss common obstacles to present struggles and how they can be concretely overcome. Most importantly, this training, led by experienced organizers who come from a variety of different political backgrounds, develops participants' confidence in their own agency and ability to intervene.
