Stronger Guardrails, Cleaner Future — Act by Monday! <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=c25ed6a80b2f59c4bbc5f85c97c3f66a76d47bdebce508f512594115ed31e1482421c351c34b552d06101bc925f66c9bcf68ddd6eb0d568c> Fight back against AI, cloud, and cryptocurrency-driven data centers! Don't let corporate data centers drive up utility costs and jeopardize our climate and salmon recovery goals. Tell the state's Data Center Workgroup, Washingtonians won't tolerate tax breaks for data centers without real public benefits, including jobs and clean energy. Send your comment now! <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=c25ed6a80b2f59c49f4127f68263db0c6297522668bbe93c7f6406ead2ceffd38942ce50f527ecec3029093c481481f969453bac14bce6b205b96a10a358935f> Dear John, Washington state is facing a tidal wave of demand for new and expanded data centers, primarily fueled by the expansion of artificial intelligence, cloud computing, and cryptocurrency mining. These facilities consume enormous amounts of electricity and water, often clustering in Central and Eastern Washington because of cheap access to hydropower and ground water. Governor Ferguson assembled a “Data Center Workgroup” to offer recommendations about how the state approaches data centers <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=c25ed6a80b2f59c4ce80d2d5736020732d6 167187f352ec33d500e0f95afb26cc85d7ff0afb374298f2349595115406c3361ef3e35ead399> . They just released their draft recommendations. They’ve given Washingtonians just ONE WEEK - until the end of the day on Monday, October 6th - to make public comments. That’s where you come in! <https://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=c25ed6a80b2f59c42f16f240438d145d763ff8c63e8941a410a52994057c179d252b311f9aed0a54640486a90c4bb65a99c4bcd7ae7c10ce2dff850f0888f902> We need Sierra Club members to speak up so powerful corporations like Amazon, Meta, Google, and Microsoft don’t continue to get tax breaks, fast-track permitting, and fewer regulations, to go along with their record profits. Without strong guardrails, data centers threaten to drive up electric rates for rural and low-income residents, strain local water and energy systems, worsen our climate crisis, and jeopardize salmon recovery efforts. Please tell the Data Center Workgroup: no more tax breaks and loose regulations for data centers! Corporations must prove that these projects deliver real public benefits – and contribute to a just, affordable climate and clean energy future for all without further damage to our already dwindling salmon.
