Dear Mr. Stewart:
Please read and consider the following comments regarding the
Jefferson County Shoreline Master Program Amendment:
Four generations of my family have owned and enjoyed a lot with a
rustic cabin on Hood Canal. My grandmother purchased this piece of
property more than 50 years ago, stating that she wanted our family to
always have a place to enjoy the beach, water and view of Hood Canal.
During this time we have enjoyed countless hours of relaxing on the beach,
digging clams, collecting oysters, swimming, fishing, boating and picnicking.
We all love “the cabin” and the recreational pleasures that it provides.
We are aware that with the right to enjoy this land, beach and water,
comes the responsibility to protect it for present and future use. We have
always tried to maintain and improve our property while keeping it quite
natural and protected.
We ask that in adopting the SMP, you strive to maintain a balance
between responsible protection of the environment of Hood Canal and a
fostering of reasonable use of the land, beaches and water. Allowing
unrestricted building that erodes the shoreline, and/or pollutes the waters
would not be responsible protection of the environment. However, imposing
restrictions on landowners so stringent that it precludes them from
accessing their beaches and waters would not be reasonable use either.
Please keep this balance at the forefront of your goals when making final
decisions regarding the Shoreline Master Program Amendment.
Thank you for your consideration of these comments.
Respectfully submitted,
