As a nurse and an educator, jobs were plentiful in other places, but we were drawn to this community's lovely wooded habitats and exquisite shorelines. We believed reduced salaries were a reasonable trade for being able to bike to work, hear the peeps of frogs from our front porch, and enjoyed the taste of fresh wild salmon and halibut--public benefits that no salary differential could encompass, no five acre plot of my own could contain. It was the bounty of the natural resources that led us to decide that we should become part of this community. 1 I want to thank the County Commissioners, the Planning Commission and staff for their efforts in updating the County’s shoreline management plan. We support the locally approved Shoreline Master Program adopted by the Jefferson County Board of Commissioners, and we are confident of its fairness and reasonableness. The process involved careful deliberations and appropriately incorporated public comment and scientific data . Comprehensive plans designated the scientifically-based protection of fragile, environmental resources to be of primary importance; because they are so consequential to all of us, so vital to the health of all, they are deemed to be "critical". We support the 150 foot buffers within the Conservancy and Natural designated areas and the recognition that this a default buffer that can be modified based on site specific conditions. We also want to affirm the concept that these buffer adjustments should be based on the concept of NO NET LOSS to the shoreline’s functions and values. The citizens of Jefferson County’s were diligent in providing a sound document that can act as a contract with the citizens of the state to ensure the protection of our fragile coastlines. We need a plan that protects the quality of life for citizens throughout the state and preserves peoples' reasons for remaining here to work, pay taxes, and participate in everyday life. We urge you to approve the Jefferson County Shoreline Master Program as it is written. Sincerely, Susan and Denis Langlois 360-385-1266 2
