Comments RE: Locally Approved Jefferson County Shoreline Master Program (SMP)
For the public record, I express my overall support for this SMP effort and product.
Because the DCD made direct mailings and provided many opportunities for citizen participation, the
resulting involvement led to a balanced approach of meeting both ecosystem and shoreline property
owner needs as well as those of all Washington residents who are stakeholders in our waters and
shorelines.
The use of clearly written regulations will lead to appropriate protections for both shoreline functions and
property values. Setting 150’ buffers based on BAS, yet providing terms for some modifications when
ecological functions can be retained seems justified.
The prohibition of commercial net pen farming and fostering of non-structural shoreline protection (i.e.
NOT armoring) are also important features I support.
I hope this SMP approach will be followed in Clallam County, where I live.
