(ECY) Cc:fabianj@olympus.net Subject:Jefferson County Shoreline Master Program Categories:LASMP Public Comment Hi Jeff, Regarding the Jefferson County Shoreline Master Program here some of the things I was pleased to see: 1) Citizen involvement and community outreach was outstanding. 2) Department of Community Development (DCD) provided multiple opportunities for involvement over a four year period, including several direct mailings to shoreline property owners. 3) Balanced to meet needs of both property owners and Puget Sound’s ecosystem 4) Used peer-reviewed science to support policies and decisions Below are listed the parts of the Shoreline Master Program I found very appealing: Prohibits all mining and mining-related activities on our natural, conservation, and 1) residential shorelines. While the current pit-to-pier project would be grandfathered, it will stop future projects . 2) 150 foot buffers which were supported by significant testimony at all meetings and hearings, are supported in the current science as a compromise of buffer widths necessary to protect shoreline functions. 3) Provides for flexible buffer modification where modifications are appropriate (i.e., where there is no net loss to shoreline functions) 4) Clear language and policies make it easier for citizens to understand the SMP 5) Clear regulations provides land use consistency and improves property values 6) Prohibits commercial net pen farming 7) Minimizes the need for shoreline armoring by encouraging non-structural remedies 1 My special thanks go to: 1) The Board of County Commissioners for analyzing every piece of testimony and to incorporate their ideas, where appropriate 2) Involvement of shoreline owners on Policy Advisory Committee 3) Efforts of DCD staff to communicate with shoreline owners at all stages of the four and a half year process. ********************************************************************* Susie Learned Friends of Chimacum Creek Adopt-a-Park ... neighbors & friends who help maintain Jefferson Co Irondale Beach Park for recreational use and help keep this a proud heritage of Jefferson County.
