Mr. Stewart,
Thank you for the opportunity to comment on Jefferson County’s Shoreline Master Program. As a previous resident of
Jefferson County, a regular visitor, and a founding member of the Hood Canal Coalition I encourage adoption of the
Jefferson County SMP. The proposed SMP is a balanced, thoughtful and appropriate plan. It protects Hood Canal,
Jefferson County Shorelines, the environment, individual quality of life, the peninsula’s economy, and the hood canal
bridge. Hood Canal is one of the last semi pristine natural fjords remaining in the United States. Yet it is currently in
decline and needs help and protection not industrialization. The Hood Canal Bridge is the lifeline for peninsula residents.
Prohibiting future industrialization of Hood Canal will ensure continued economic growth for a region that is based on
fisheries, recreation, tourism, natural resources, and quality of life instead of industrialization and personal gain at any
cost. If you need any encouragement to approve this plan please google marine environmental disasters or read about
the recent damage to the Great Barrier Reef caused by a single ship taking a shortcut to save a couple of bucks. Also
google “bridge allisions” for an accurate assessment of bridge/ship/barge accidents that regularly occur. The legislation
currently under review prohibits mining and associated activities along the shorelines of Hood Canal and most of the
shorelines of Jefferson County. This prohibition is critical to the economic, social, and environmental well being of
Jefferson County and peninsula residents as well as the multitudes of visitors. It is a good piece of legislation. Please
support it. Thank You.
Sincerely,
Larry Mayes
