(ECY) Cc:sarah robinson Subject:Comment on proposed updates to SMP Categories:LASMP Public Comment Good Afternoon, I am writing to express my concerns at proposed changes to the Jefferson County Shoreline Master Program. We own waterfront property on the island of Hood Head at the North end of the Hood Canal (lots 107-108). I particularly wanted to make sure my concerns were registered within the public comment request period ending today 5/11/10 at 5pm. Just to step back a little, we found the Washington Dept of Ecology website, while I'm sure comprehensive, excessively difficult to navigate as we were trying to discern information of relevance to our situation. In trying to figure out how these changes would impact us, we wanted to filter out the potential disinformation circulating in the Hood Head community, but were unable to find much in terms of concrete proposals. Consequently my comments may be based on incomplete information but here goes anyway. In general we are concerned that changes to the law will place draconian restrictions on our ability to enjoy our property. In common with our Hood Head neighbors, we consider ourselves careful stewards of the natural waterfront and go to great lengths to ensure we make as little environmental impact as possible. We use natural trails to access the beach and remove plastic and other detritus as necessary. We fear that changes to shoreline regulations will overwhelmingly impact the little guys, like us, who genuinely treasure the natural environment, but are unable to hire a raft of lawyers to pore over every detail of our land stewardship. In such a situation my suggestion would be to proceed with a more collaborative approach to educate us landowners in suggested best practices rather than to apply the sledgehammer approach of enforcing unreasonable punative actions. Thanks very much for your time, Yours faithfully, Alan and Sarah Robinson. 1
