(ECY) Cc:Phyllis Schultz; Connie Gallant Subject:Approve Jefferson County SMP Categories:LASMP Public Comment Dear Jeff Stewart: I'm a citizen of Jefferson County (938 Monroe, Port Townsend, WA 98368) and I'm writing to urge DOE approval for the Shoreline Master Program (SMP) scheduled for consideration here on April 20th. One of the classics in the 20th century environmental literature is the 1972 Donella Meadows et al Limits to Growth study prepared for the Club of Rome's Project on the Predicament of Mankind. Early in the introduction to the second edition of that study the authors assert, "The majority of the world's people are concerned with matters that affect only family or friends over a short period of time. . . . Only a very few people have a global perspective that extends far into the future." The Jefferson County Board of County Commissioners (BOCC) has approved a SMP with a vision reaching far into the future, taking current property rights concerns into account, but remembering that policy decisions should be taken to honor our obligations to future generations, who will benefit or suffer long after current actors--property owners, county and state officials, etc--have passed from the scene. Enormous effort and care have been expended in the preparation of this SMP by the BOCC and many Jefferson County citizens, care to respect all the stake holders and to honor the relevant peer-reviewed science. Please accept this multigenerational vision and approve the Jefferson County SMP. Thank you. Sincerely, /Bob Schultz (Professor Emeritus, UW Bothell, Environmental Studies) 1
