(ECY) Subject:SMP Comments Categories:LASMP Public Comment Mr. Jeffree Stewart P O Box 47775 Olympia, WA 98504 Re: Jefferson County Shoreline Master Program Dear Mr. Stewart, Thank you and thanks to the Department of Community Development for providing opportunities for public involvement in the SMP rewrite process. I specifically support and feel strongly about: - prohibiting all mining and mining related activities on the all shorelines -prohibiting commercial net pen farming -minimizing the need for shoreline armoring by encouraging nonstructural remedies -150 foot buffers -increased protections of uplands to improve ecological functions and accomplish a no net loss of shoreline functions I am in agreement with Sierra Club's stand on aquaculture -- the same level of protections should be required on the tidelands to prevent direct adverse impacts on aquaculture. Shoreline activities require stringent permits and detailed environmental protections, but, strangely, these protections are absent in aquaculture regulations. All aquaculture operations should require a shoreline development permit. Puget Sound native species must be protected by the SMP. Industry should not have the right to remove/destroy our crabs, moon snails, ghost shrimp, starfish and marine vegetation such as eelgrass, algae and kelp. Nor should shorebirds and ducks be harassed or killed. If a site cannot be used without destruction of native species, the expansion should be denied. Thank you for your consideration of these comments.
