Dear Mr Stewart,
I've just learned that the Jefferson County Shoreline Master Program is being reviewed by the
Dept of Ecology, and I would like to offer my comments to you as a long-term resident of
Jefferson County.
I do not live on any shoreline of the Hood Canal, but I do live nearby, and the health of our
waterways is important to me as a citizen of the county, but more importantly, as a citizen of
the world our children and grandchildren are going to inherit. It is only logical that maintaining
the health of our water systems is vital to the continuing health of all life on the planet. The
Hood Canal has long been in jeopardy due to pollution and other hazards, and while responsible
folk have worked hard to restore the Canal to health, there has, in recent years, been a plan
afoot to use the Canal to make money, no matter how badly that plan affects so many species
(including humans!).
Local residents and responsible businesses have fought against the plan to radically increase
mining-related activities on the Hood Canal because those who are behind these mining
operations are ignoring the impact on so many species in favor of monetary gain. We now see a
real opportunity here to stop those activities for good, ensuring that the Canal can continue to
be rehabilitated.
Our county commissioners have validated this by approving the Master Program. It is now up to
the Department of Ecology to weigh in on this vital legislation. It is my fervent hope that they
see our precious Canal the same way we do; a home for countless species, a food source for both
man and wildlife, and an enduring place of beauty; with proper care it can continue to be all of
these things for generations to come.
