Commissioners,
I live on Egg and I Ridge Road and am quite concerned about the proposed changes to recycling in the county, and in particular how it will impact me and my neighbors. The proposed changes
put recycling bins behind the scales at the solid waste sites, eliminating the three sites in the county where I and my neighbors have been dropping recycling for decades. We are told
that an alternative is a contracted pickup service, which has a very high cost and for residents such as myself and my neighbors, up to half a mile from the county road, a significant
challenge with bins, especially in winter and for my more elderly neighbors. I try to minimize my solid waste and typically drop off three car (not truck) loads of garbage at the Transfer
Station each year, meaning that if I were to use a pickup service, my costs would increase nearly seven-fold.. I make high use of the cardboard, paper, metal, and plastic recycling
to minimize my landfill waste, in alignment with the County's goal of Reduce, Reuse, Recycle.
If accounts must be balanced, perhaps the correct approach is to increase the general tipping fee to promote recycling and retain the open recycling bins. The very likely alternative
is that recycling as a practice will simply end in this county, as there would be no real incentive for busy families to separate and manage recyclables, resulting in mixed garbage
and recycling.
I ask that you look beyond the proposed solution and vote no on the proposed changes.
Thank you.
