Lewis County Braces for Impacts of New Standards for Public Defense
Lewis County faces challenges with funding its mandated public defense efforts. County officials say the problem is likely to get worse pending a new state rule that restricts caseloads
for attorneys working as public defenders.
During the presentation from Butler, she made clear that even with the slower implementation, the county faces two significant challenges to complying with the new standards; firstly
finding more public defenders and, secondly, paying them.

‘Joke’ Proposal Sparks Serious Discussion About Doubling Number of County Council Meeting Days
What started off as a cheeky amendment by outgoing Whatcom County Council member Todd Donovan sparked a serious conversation about the need to increase the frequency of council meetings.
Donovan and Tyler Byrd spearheaded the push to increase public meetings from every other Tuesday to every Tuesday at the Sept. 23 meeting due to the council’s increasingly complex business.

Counties Consider Partnering With Columbia Land Trust to Buy up Forests in Grays River Watershed
Wahkiakum and Pacific counties are considering starting a land trust that would use grants to buy thousands of acres of forest about 20 miles west of Cathlamet in coming decades. The
move would give the counties much needed timber revenue while protecting public access to the lands and potentially minimizing flooding.
The counties are considering partnering with Vancouver-based Columbia Land Trust to create what the trust calls a “community-owned forest” in the upper Grays River watershed.
