As a Nottoway woman, I've been taught that it is our responsibility to be in good relationship with all elements of creation. <http://image.emails.sierraclub.org/lib/fe8f1372746d007871/m/22/1a6411f1-d430-4730-a89c-6df5a08e58b0.png> Today is Indigenous Peoples' Day, a day to honor deep-rooted connections between community, service, and the land. As a Nottoway woman, I've been taught that it is our responsibility to be in good relationship with all elements of creation. To be conscientious, grateful, and protective. My favorite way to embrace all three is through outings like kayaking trips. I especially love it when these activities are led by Indigenous people in places where we are working in relationship with the land, water, and community. I've had the immense pleasure and honor of leading outings on the Nottoway River to showcase the environmental work of my community, the Nottoway Indian Tribe of Virginia <http://click.emails.sierrac lub.org/?qs=4c9d681ea86f80450b41d2cfbf734c0e6a5836dede8cfa2564a5751b3635e999fd99614970cd3641a4d325e7069f743847847a50a6139417> , as well as partnering with the Great Coharie River Initiative of the Coharie Indian Tribe of NC to offer a nine-mile paddle through the Black River Refuge, home to the ancient 2,600+ year-old bald cypress trees of Three Sisters Swamp -- the fifth oldest living tree in the world! <http://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=4c9d681ea86f804556ceee9b29982648f6d0d954d42f52f033dd72ffc3f06acd161373916628b0386c21b1f1ddf6c4397fd0419a100bb46b> Sierra Club staff and volunteers co-steward this two-day outing to visit the Nottoway River, and other significant cultural lands for the Nottoway Indian Tribe, with The Nature Conservancy. Paddles like these are important ways to help connect folks with our stories -- those of the Nottoway People as well as our relatives like the Coharie. Outings like these transcend recreation; they are about fostering connection and honoring the enduring relationship Indigenous peoples have with these lands and waters. Doing the policy work and talking to folks in D.C. is important, but it's just as important to bring folks out on the water to connect with what we're talking about, to see it firsthand. To build understanding and relationships that benefits our water, land, and community for many, many generations to come. For the Sierra Club, this year's Indigenous Peoples' Day celebrates a huge step forward for us. In September, our Board of Directors passed our first Indigenous Co-stewardship Policy and Guidance <http://click.emails.sierraclub.org/?qs=4c9d681ea86f8045aa5ff0305f1bd3bd4a24cbf65952fc914cadaf139c544dc96a89c39aba825ebedc7e7d290035f36211549d1b4fa6fd60> .
