HomeMy WebLinkAboutPROCLAMATION re Food for all day Regular Agenda JEFFERSON COUNTY BOARD OF COUNTY COMMISSIONERS AGENDA REQUEST TO: Board of County Commissioners FROM: Adiel McKnight,Deputy Clerk of the Board DATE: October 20,2025 SUBJECT: PROCLAMATION re: Proclaiming the last Saturday of October 2025 as Food for All Day STATEMENT OF ISSUE: Jefferson County Food Bank Association operates four(4) food banks in Brinnon, Port Townsend, Quilcene and Tri area. They serve over 3,300 households per month and rely on community support to fulfill their purpose of providing nutritious food with dignity, respect and care to anyone in need. For forty (40)years churches, community organizations, neighborhoods and businesses have come together to create a What A Valuable Experience (WAVE) food drive of donations during the month of October. The last Saturday of October marks the culmination of this campaign and they would like to declare this last Saturday, each year as "Food For All Day" in Jefferson County. FISCAL IMPACT There is no fiscal impact. RECOMMENDATION: Staff recommends that the Jefferson County Board of Commissioners declare the last Saturday of the month of October as "Food For All Day." This recommendation is to recognize the long-standing support the community has provided to the food banks and the tremendous partnership this campaign demonstrates each year. Peters, County Administrator Date PROCLAMATION WHEREAS, in the month of October, for the past 40 years, churches, community organizations, neighborhoods, and businesses have come together to volunteer to gather food to donate to the Jefferson County Food Bank Association to help neighbors experiencing food insecurity; and WHEREAS, this effort known as What A Value Experience (WAVE) is welcoming to all and is to the benefit of anyone in need in Jefferson County experiencing food insecurity; and WHEREAS, food insecurity is not just a missed meal, an empty stomach or an individual experience. Food insecurity is a community-wide symptom of exclusion, of not having enough nutritious food, income or represented voice and where hunger is a symptom of barriers to employment, education, housing and healthcare; and WHEREAS, Jefferson County Food Bank Association serves over 20%of households in the county throughout the year and relies on the generosity of individual donations of time, money and food to meet this need and distributes over 1 million pounds of food each year with dignity, respect and care; and WHEREAS, the WAVE campaign helps build awareness of this need and demand; and WHEREAS, together we can build a community that does not go hungry and where every voice matters. We can build a community that shares responsibility for each other and well-being; and WHEREAS, Jefferson County residents, recognize food access is a fundamental and public health imperative; NOW, THEREFORE, the Jefferson County Board of County Commissioners, do hereby proclaim the last Saturday of October, 2025 as FOOD FOR ALL DAY in Jefferson County, and encourages all residents to join in recognizing the WAVE Campaign and its benefit to the Community and all residents.
