Do not open attachments or click on links if you are not expecting them. With apologies for sending this a couple days late, here’s this week’s WSF update. WSF’s Damaged Electric Vehicle Policy Starting Nov. 1, a new policy takes effect for transporting damaged or inoperable electric, hybrid and alternative fuel vehicles on our ferries. The policy is designed to keep everyone safe and prevent fires or other electrical hazards while on our ferries. These types of vehicles can be dangerous if not handled correctly. They can have battery fires or electrical problems that put passengers, crew and our vessels at risk. To keep everyone safe, only vehicles that are stable and safe – without signs of fire, smoke, or electrical problems – will be allowed on board. Tow companies and drivers should complete the WSF Transport Form for Hybrid, Electric, and Alternative Energy Vehicles <https://wsdot.wa.gov/sites/default/files/2025-10/WSF-TransportForm-DamagedEVs.p df> before arriving at a terminal. Captains have full authority to deny boarding if they believe a vehicle is unsafe or missing paperwork. WSF will always support Captains who make safety-based decisions. These new rules will help keep everyone safe as more electric and hybrid vehicles travel on our ferries. If a fire starts in an EV, hybrid or alternative energy vehicle, our crew use high-volume water hoses to manage the fire. If a vehicle needs to be opened or moved, trained emergency responders will handle it. As a reminder, charging EVs on our ferries or at our terminals is not allowed. Completed Sailings For the week of Oct. 13 – Oct.19 – we completed 98.30% of our 3,059 scheduled sailings. Of the 53 cancellations, 47% (25) were due to crewing, 40% (21) were due to vessel-related issues, 8% (4) were due to weather conditions, 4% (2) were for other reasons (fueling on the Point Defiance-Tahlequah route), and 2% (1) was due to an emergency (Kittitas made an unscheduled stop at Vashon Island for a medevac). There were no schedule resets last week. For comparison, during a similar period last year (October 14 – October 20, 2024), we completed 98.31% of our 2,789 scheduled sailings. Of the 48 cancellations, 73% (35) were for vessel-related issues, 13% (6) were for weather conditions, 13% (6) were for tides, and 2% (1) was due to an emergency. Customer Service Alerts For the week of Oct. 13 – Oct. 19 - our customer service team sent 90 rider alerts, received 1,708 customer calls, and fielded more than 140 written comments and emails related to reservations, schedules, and fares. The ferry was taken out of service on our Mukilteo/Clinton route on Sept. 28 because of an engine problem. The issue required an engine overhaul. This was detailed and time-consuming work that our skilled employees are trained to do. Hybrid Conversions/New Vessels/Terminal Electrification New Vessels – Governor Bob Ferguson selected the $714.5 million bid from Florida-based Eastern Shipbuilding Group to build three new 160-vehicle hybrid-electric ferries. We will move forward with the contracting process, following the first competitive bid for ferry construction in more than 25 years. Terminal Electrification – Vessel charging system proposals have been reviewed and an award announcement is expected soon.
