A Year to Remember We came together to toast an incredible year for the Washington Wildlife and Recreation Coalition, one that saw $120 million secured for the Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program (WWRP). That means 125+ new projects, ranging from playgrounds and trails to preserved farmland, will connect our communities and protect the places we love for generations to come. But the night was about so much more than numbers. Behind every dollar secured and acre protected is a community of advocates that make our work possible. Congratulations to two truly inspiring leaders! The Evans & Lowry Distinguished Leadership Award, named in honor of former Governors Dan Evans and Mike Lowry, celebrates bipartisan leadership in advancing Washington’s outdoors. Governors Evans and Lowry – once political rivals – joined forces across party lines to co-found the Coalition in 1989, establishing a legacy of collaboration that helped launch the nationally recognized Washington Wildlife and Recreation Program (WWRP). Their partnership has since helped secure more than $2.2 billion for parks, trails, wildlife habitat, and working lands across Washington. The award recognizes leaders who embody this same model of bipartisan cooperation to protect Washington’s wildlife and healthy habitats, create recreational opportunities and equity in access to the outdoors, as well as support our outdoor economy. This year’s honorees, Senator Trudeau (D–Tacoma) and Representative Steele (R–Chelan), exemplify that spirit of collaboration. In the 2025 Legislative Session, during a particularly challenging budget year, they championed the WWRP and played pivotal roles in securing $120 million for the program in the 2025–2027 State Capital Budget. This investment – which would not have been possible without their leadership, commitment to bipartisan collaboration, and integrity – will fund over 125 new parks, trails, wildlife habitat, and working lands projects across Washington. The project officially closed this month, marking a major milestone for prairie restoration in the north Puget Sound. These native prairie communities face threats from encroaching trees and invasive plants – but the project tackled those threats head-on. WA State Parks removed unwanted trees, controlled invasive species, and reintroduced native prairie plants through careful seeding and planting. Using restoration strategies proven in the southern Puget Sound and Willamette Valley, the project builds on past successes and strengthens partnerships across the region. Moran State Park is a gem in the heart of Orcas Island. With miles of hiking trails and scenic lakes, campgrounds, biking paths, horseback riding, and the spectacular views atop Mt. Constitution, it continues to delight visitors of all kinds.
