PURPOSE STATEMENT
Chronic pain is a common and often debilitating condition among older adults, frequently accompanied by depression. Despite the availability of evidence-based behavioral interventions
that can address both pain and associated mental health concerns, these treatments remain underutilized, particularly among older adults. This continuing education lecture will examine
the impacts of chronic pain in older adults, present findings from a recent study exploring innovative approaches to care, and review strategies for overcoming barriers to engagement
of behavioral interventions among older adults with chronic pain.
LEARNING OBJECTIVES
1. Describe the impacts of chronic pain among older adults
2. Identify existing evidence-based behavioral modalities for pain management
3. Outline several barriers to uptake of behavioral interventions among older adults with pain

About VA's ILEAD and MIRECC Presents
NW MIRECC applies modern genetic, neurologic, and clinical trial methodology to the discovery and development of new and more effective treatments for major and often treatment resistant
mental disorders afflicting Veterans and the active-duty combat personnel who will become Veterans. The MIRECC Presents, a bi-monthly web-based trainings, is designed to translate current
scientific and clinical research into thoughtful and accessible information that can be used by clinicians to enhance their care of Veterans. In this way, MIRECC Presents empowers mental
health providers to integrate cutting-edge treatments and timely research into their daily clinical practices, thereby raising the quality of care for Veterans who experience mental
health challenges.
As one of four statutory missions, VA educates and trains health professionals to enhance the quality of and timely access to care provided to Veterans within VHA's healthcare system.
To achieve this mission, "To educate for VA and the Nation", the VA has conducted health professions education and training in partnership with affiliated U.S. academic institutions
in accordance with the landmark 1946 Policy Memorandum No. 2. Title 38 U.S.C. Section 7302 mandates that VA assist in carrying out a “program of education and training of health personnel”
for its own needs and those of the nation. VA's ILEAD is committed to providing VHA employees with needs-based learning opportunities that enhance their clinical skills and help them
earn the continuing education credits/hours they need to meet professional state boards requirements and to maintain licensure.
ILEAD holds 22 national and 5 state accreditations for continuing education in the health care professions, and it collaborates with subject matter experts within VHA to ensure that
its learning programs are effective and meet the accreditation criteria of one or more of its aligned accrediting bodies. NW MIRECC seeks to improve the mental health and well-being
of Veterans through research and dissemination of information to providers both within the VA and the general public.
