(UPDATED) Justice on Hold: Accused Walk Free as Public Defense Office Implements New Caseload Standards in Spokane
In Spokane County, it’s catch and release when it comes to those accused of crimes. Criminals are released without arraignment because the Public Defender’s Office is reaching caseload
limits. Only three days into November, 15 days into October, and nine days into September, the Public Defender’s Office has refused cases until the start of the following month.
This means that individuals accused of crimes may wait in jail for up to 72 hours without legal representation—and then walk free if no attorney can be assigned. The Washington State
Association of Counties (WSAC) is calling on the Governor and Legislature to take immediate action to address the growing public defense crisis across the state.

Skamania County Eyes Penalties as it Ties Rescues Record
Skamania County is on pace to set a new record for search and rescues this year. The 67 rescues in 2025, as of earlier this month, already tie the previous record. The costly rescues
come as the county’s fiscal struggles continue because of gaps left by lost timber revenues and promised federal dollars that have not materialized.

County Selects New Auditor
The Pacific County Commission selected a new Pacific County auditor on October 31 following the resignation of Alex Gerow. The new auditor will take over the office effective December
1. Gerow submitted a letter of resignation on Sept. 24, which commissioners accepted during a special meeting on Sept. 26. The county immediately opened applications for the position.

Clallam County Eyes Jail Health Partnership with NOHN
Clallam County Commissioners are reviewing a proposed Memorandum of Understanding that would expand medical and behavioral health care for people preparing to leave the county jail.
The agreement, still pending approval, outlines a partnership between the Clallam County Sheriff’s Office and the North Olympic Healthcare Network to provide coordinated pre-release
services under the state’s new Reentry Demonstration Initiative. That initiative allows Medicaid—known as Apple Health in Washington—to cover essential care for incarcerated individuals
during the 90 days leading up to their release.
