Veterans recognized throughout the fleet Veterans Day is a time to honor those who have served our country with courage and dedication. We are proud so many veterans work here at Washington State Ferries. Veterans bring unique skills, experiences and perspectives shaped by their time in the military. Their dedication to public service continues every day in the work they do to keep communities connected. On Tuesday, Nov. 11, we will honor all veterans with a whistle salute. All operating ferries will sound their horns at 11:11 a.m., recognizing the signing of the armistice that ended World War I. Each vessel in operation tomorrow will also fly the flag of one of the six military services and the Merchant Marine flag. Completed Sailings For the week of Nov. 3 – Nov. 9 – we completed 98.27% of our 3,059 scheduled sailings. Of the 57 cancellations, 37% (21) were due to tidal currents, 28% (16) were due to other miscellaneous reasons, 16% (9) were due to vessel-related issues, 9% (5) were due to schedule resets (when a boat is so far behind schedule, we cancel a sailing to get it back on schedule, providing predictability for customers), 7% (4) were due to crewing, and 4% (2) were due to emergencies. For comparison, during a similar period last year (November 4 – November 10, 2024), we completed 98.78% of our 2,789 scheduled sailings. Of the 36 cancellations that week, 39% (14) were due to weather, 31% (11) were due to other miscellaneous reasons, 11% (4) were due to vessel-related issues, 11% (4) were due to schedule resets, and 8% (3) were due to crewing. Customer Service Alerts For the week of Nov. 3 – Nov. 9 - our customer service team sent 81 rider alerts, received 1,670 customer calls, and fielded more than 105 written comments and emails related to reservations, schedules, and fares. The reality of adding service: WSF will continue to operate without a dedicated service relief vessel and will instead provide the maximum possible service with available vessels. This means that in the event of a vessel-related disruption, a route may operate at a reduced service level. As important as it is to have enough boats, WSF must also have the right classes of vessels available to match terminal infrastructure to maintain full service on certain routes. Hybrid Conversions/New Vessels/Terminal Electrification New Vessels – Governor Bob Ferguson selected the $714.5 million bid from Florida-based Eastern Shipbuilding Group to build three new 160-vehicle hybrid-electric ferries. We will move forward with the contracting process, following the first competitive bid for ferry construction in more than 25 years. Terminal Electrification – Vessel charging system proposals have been reviewed and an award announcement is expected soon.
