Fight Over Counting Mail-In Ballots After Election Day Will Go Before Supreme Court
While the case is out of Mississippi, it could disrupt how elections are conducted in Washington and other vote-by-mail states. The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday took up a Republican-backed
challenge to counting mail-in ballots received after Election Day.
Depending how the justices rule, the case could be consequential for Washington and other states that vote by mail. It stems from a lawsuit against a Mississippi state law allowing mail-in
ballots received within five business days after Election Day to still be counted. Roughly 30 states have similar laws, with varying grace periods.

Prosecutor Asks King County Council for Resources to Fix 'Crushing' Caseloads

Outdoor Recreation's Economic Benefit
The newly updated Economic Analysis of Outdoor Recreation in Washington State confirms that Washington’s outdoors continue to be an economic driver in the state’s economy. The report
estimates that more than $25.2 billion is spent in Washington on recreation trips and equipment annually. Spending on lodging, equipment, and permits drives more spending because local
businesses also buy supplies and services and their employees spend their wages locally. Combined, this spending adds 2.4 percent to the state’s economic production (gross domestic
product).
In addition, outdoor recreation supports 237,000 jobs annually, or 5.4 percent of the state’s employment. The report also notes that of all the places to visit, state and federal public
lands are the most visited, hosting 36 percent of all recreation days, while local parks host 30 percent and private lands host 34 percent. In total, Washingtonians and visitors participated
in outdoor recreation about 437 million days in 2024.
