Congratulations to the
Clemente Class of 2025!
Last June, the Jefferson Clemente Course at OWL360—the longest-running and still the only rural course in the national Clemente network—celebrated its first graduation under our new
host with one of the largest classes in the course’s 25-year history! Fifteen students met for six months, two nights a week, engaging with one another to examine some of the seminal
questions of human experience. What is justice? What is the responsibility of the individual to their community? Why do we make art? What does it mean to live a good life?
Each student found their voice, listened to ideas and opinions that diverged from their own, reflected on their life experiences, dug deep for their own wisdom, and full-heartedly contributed
to building a classroom community that was characterized by courage, mutual trust, and a deeply shared—in some cases, rediscovered—sense of joy in learning.
But on the heels of this great success came the harsh reality that many of the agencies that fund programs like Clemente and the essential student support provided by OWL360—mental health,
housing and food security, job training—have lost enormous amounts of funding, and rural communities like ours are being deeply affected. This presents a hard future for our most vulnerable
neighbors, especially young adults.

Why Clemente? Why Now?
Jefferson County has consistently been identified as having minimal opportunities for higher education, especially for nontraditional students who may be socially or economically disadvantaged.
In addition, we know that 55% of Washington State students do not earn a post-secondary credential beyond their high school diploma after 8 years. The rate in Jefferson County is 70%
(ERDC). With Peninsula College closing the doors of its Port Townsend program, the Clemente course is now the only in-person higher education offering in the county.
We also know that 25% of Jefferson County youth ages 16–24 are counted as “disengaged,” meaning they are not employed, not in school, and not in the military. This is twice the national
average, 10% higher than Clallam County, and 15% higher than Kitsap County. Jefferson County has the second highest youth “disengagement” rate in Washington State
(Measure of America).

It is important for us to hear what other people think, and the community in the classroom made me more confident because it created a safe space for people to be who they are. I really
appreciated all the considerations and accommodations for students who faced difficulties.
Clemente exposed me to a lot of ideas that I otherwise wouldn’t have learned about, and often when we read a new text I’d think, “Oh! This is something everyone should read!"

About Reckoning: A white filmmaker comes into a Black community looking for transformation in the lives of low-income adults enrolled in a Clemente Course in the Humanities. As he spends
more time with the students, he's awakened to the violence, racism, and gentrification that threatens their very place in the city.
