While this shutdown was completely avoidable, I’m relieved that federal workers in our district are once again receiving paychecks, and essential programs like WIC, SNAP, and Head Start can continue serving families. Here’s a look at what I’ve been up to: North Mason Food Bank Visit Before heading back to D.C., I stopped by the North Mason Food Bank, where staff shared how the shutdown increased demand for food assistance — especially among federal workers who had gone weeks without pay. Their commitment to serving the community during such a challenging time is inspiring, and I’ll continue advocating for strengthening our federal nutrition programs to ensure no family ever has to go hungry. Government Reopened After 43 days of uncertainty, Congress finally reached an agreement to reopen the government. I’ve spoken with countless federal workers, small business owners, and families who endured unnecessary hardship during this shutdown, and I’m relieved they’ll finally have some stability. It’s deeply unfortunate, however, that doing this came at the cost of millions of American families losing access to affordable health care due to Republicans’ Big Ugly Law and failure to extend the ACA tax credits. These subsidies help tens of thousands of Washingtonians afford coverage — and without them, premiums are set to skyrocket by over $1,500 on average for families in our district. Health care is a right, not a privilege, and I’ll keep pushing for long-term solutions that make it affordable for every family.
