Dear Commissioners:
I am writing to express my support for the Port Townsend Rec Center and my concern at rumors that it might be closed as a cost cutting measure.
When I count the blessings of life in Port Townsend, Zumba at the PT Rec Center is at the top of the list.
For seniors like me, it’s a chance to exercise my body, challenge my mind (to learn and remember the choreography in the various dances), and interact with people of different ages,
genders, and fitness levels — without the expense and intimidation factor of joining a gym.
The classes draw a huge crowd -- five days a week, year-round -- thanks to great instructors but also because of the venue: an indoor space that is big and well-ventilated enough that
it feels as safe as exercising outdoors, a concern for many of us in the aftermath of COVID and throughout flu season.
Pacific Northwesterners are famously willing to exercise in any weather, but for less hardy people, having a place to exercise and congregate on cold, rainy, windy days feels essential
to physical, mental, and emotional health.
I would happily contribute to a fund-raising campaign (and/or pay more to attend classes) to keep this vital community resource open for the many groups that depend on it for a sense
of well being and connection to community.
Sincerely and with gratitude for your hard work and all the difficult choices you need to make,
Molly Tyson
