Commissioners, I am writing to you as a citizen of Port Townsend. I wanted to let you know how important the rec center gym is to me and my family. We have been in Port Townsend for
over 20 years. In that timeframe, my kids have spent many hours in that gym from birthday parties to youth basketball games and roller rink events. My own daughter, now grown up and
teaching at the local elementary school, comes to see her own young students play basketball there.
I myself have used that gym for many years, coming to Zumba 3 to 5 days a week. It’s where scores of us get our daily exercise and time with community while on our health journey. There
aren’t many spaces that can accommodate such a large group. The company I used to work for, J&S Fabrication, made the aluminum frames that the basket ball hoops are affixed to. When
I’m in Zumba, I look at those frames on the wall and it reminds me of what it is to be a part of that communal space and the support it gives to so many.
I hope you will keep this community space open for these gatherings well into the future.
