The Board permanently waived the 10% local match requirement within the Farm and Forest Account, and also approved increases in the Farm and Forest Account to better support project needs. These updates directly affect the Farmland Preservation and Forestland Preservation WWRP grant categories – two critical tools for protecting Washington’s working lands. In addition, the Board adopted a policy to permanently retain the current cost-increase process, allowing the RCO director to approve cost increases of up to 10% of total project costs, limited to each parcel’s appraised value. This flexibility helps ensure that high-quality projects can continue moving forward even as land costs rise. Thanks to a $861,496 WWRP – Farmland Preservation grant <http://smartmailerclick.bisglobal.net/act_linkClick.aspx?sm_guid=OTE2NDQ2fDc5MzUzNjg5fDF8amVmZmJvY2NAY28uamVmZmVyc29uLndhLnVzfDgzMjc0MDB8aHR0c HM6Ly93aWxkbGlmZXJlY3JlYXRpb24ub3JnL3Byb2plY3RzL29sbWEtZmFybWxhbmQvfDB8MHwwfDExNjF8MHwwfHw5MTMyMzZ8MQ2> , this project ensured that more than 1,500 acres of Okanogan County’s rich agricultural land remains available for farming in the future. Keeping a Legacy Alive At Olma Ranch, farming isn’t just an occupation – it’s a way of life. That’s why the Olma Family sold the development rights to their property via a conservation easement to the Okanogan Land Trust, who used a WWRP grant to purchase the land. Rather than risk watching their ranch be subdivided and developed, as has happened to so many working operations across Washington, the Olma family chose to safeguard its agricultural future forever <http://smartmailerclick.bisglobal.net/act_linkClick.aspx?sm_guid=OTE2NDQ2fDc5MzUzNjg5fDF8amVmZmJvY2NAY28uamVmZmVyc29uLndhLnVzfDgzM jc0MDF8aHR0cHM6Ly93aWxkbGlmZXJlY3JlYXRpb24ub3JnL29sbWEtZmFtaWx5LXByZXNlcnZlcy1uZWFybHktMTYwMC1hY3Jlcy98MHwwfDB8MTE2MXwwfDB8fDkxMzIzNnwx0> . The project permanently protected 260 acres of high-production corn and hay fields and 1,277 acres of working ranchland. That means the land will continue supporting the local economy through hay, forage, and cattle production – while giving the next generation of farmers a fighting chance to keep the family legacy going. In a county where keeping farms connected and viable is a top priority, the Olma Ranch project is a major win for the entire community.
